Tamra Young Obituary

Former Durango resident Tamra D. Hunter Young died Jan. 10, 2013, in Tempe, Ariz., of ovarian cancer. She was 53.

Mrs. Young was born to LaVern Hunter and Bonnie Shepherd on March 25, 1959, in Colorado Springs. Her family moved to Durango when she was a little girl.

In 1976, Mrs. Young graduated from Bayfield High School where she played basketball. She then served as a flight attendant for US Airways for more than 10 years. She loved her job and all the places she was able to travel to, her family said.

She married Troy Young in 1980 in Phoenix. The couple divorced in 1999.

Mrs. Young enjoyed spending time with her granddaughter Langley Young, family and friends. She also enjoyed riding her Harley-Davidson motorcycle, water skiing, snow skiing, camping and, most of all, traveling the world.

She was diagnosed with ovarian cancer June 15, 2009, and was a strong fighter to the end, her family said.

Mrs. Young was preceded in death by her father, LaVern D. Hunter.

She is survived by her sons Jeremy Young of San Antonio, and Christopher Young of Gilbert, Ariz.; mother Bonnie Shepherd of Colorado Springs; sisters Teresa Richmond of Mesa, Ariz., Tena Hjelm of Nashville, Tenn., and Tracy Hunter of Colorado Springs; and a granddaughter.

A celebration of life will be held at 1:30 p.m. Jan. 19, 2013, at 2011 E. Meadow Dr. Tempe, Ariz., 85282, at the home of Dave and Sheila Stewart. The family said flowers can be sent to that address.

Donations in Mrs. Young's name also may be made to Hospice of the Valley, Friendship Village Palliative Care Unit, 2525 East Southern Ave., Tempe, Ariz., 85283.
