Dan was born on January 3, 1941, in the Brookville Hospital. He grew up working in his father's store, where his entrepreneurial spirit was strengthened. After graduation from Grove City College in 1962, he worked in industrial sales and insurance. He moved to Durango, CO in 1984 and established his consulting practice. The initial Story Project was writing and publishing a book of stories about Summerville titled Troy/Summerville Pennsylvania. The group then collaborated with the Jefferson County History Center to install story panels throughout Summerville that serve as a walking/biking trail of historic Summerville.

Dan is survived by his son Rob (Stacey) of Queen Creek, AZ, his grandson Jake (Danielle) of Queen Creek, AZ, his sister Sally (Homer) Reitz of York, PA, a niece Kelly (Dave) Miller and nephew Jonathan of York, PA, and his dear friend and companion Martha Smith, her son Matthew Smith, and grandsons Matthew and Eric Smith.
