Steve Miller Obituary

Steve Miller (1949 - 2025), was beloved by his family and those who knew him. You can't think of Steve and not hear his resounding laugh and smile to yourself. He was always up in the morning to snow blow the neighbors' sidewalks, go to work, pack up the family for a trip to the lake, go skiing, or head out for a bike ride. He loved the outdoors. In his younger days he liked to hunt and loved fishing all his life. He showed his love to us all through acts of service and creating beautiful gifts. He was a skilled woodworker, stained glass creator, and builder / fixer of all things. Our homes are warmer, gentler, brighter (literally), and updated because Steve-O was always ready to take on the next task. He was an exceptional dancer who started the moves on the floor and didn't want to leave until the very last song. He met the love of his life at Farquahrts in Durango in 1978 and he married Laura in 1980. While not always sure how to parent, he was a loving dad who did his best every day to show up for his kids (often by yelling louder than anyone else), share his talents, educate them on life not being fair (and we know it isn't!), or tell them he loved them. Most importantly, his kids knew he was proud of them. He was a doting caregiver to his dogs; frequently walking them on the path, taking them to the mountains, and showering them with affection.

He passed away on March 21st, 2025 after a tragic biking accident. He died a man who was at peace with his life; who never shied away from hard work or doing the right, but difficult, thing; who was able to retire with his wife; and who was working on projects that fulfilled him until his very last moments. His employment included the Bureau of Reclamation, La Plata County, the Federal Aviation Administration, and Russell Engineering. Steve fought in the Vietnam War as well as worked for the Veterans Administration making sure that VA facilities were safer and more accessible for other vets. He is survived by his wife of 45 years - Laura [Fleming]; kids - Annie (Jason) and Sam (Alina); grandkids - Hazel, Oren, and Cammy; his mother and brother - Vashti and Joel; his kids by different parents - Dina and Cody; and a slew of in-laws, nephews, nieces, great nieces and nephews, friends and others who are deeply saddened by losing him. His brother William, grandmas Francis and Lucy, and dad, James, will meet him in the beyond. A memorial service will be held in his honor at the Durango VFW on May 29th, 2025 at 4:00pm.

I was immensely saddened when I was told a few days ago about the tragic accident that took the life of such a fine human being. I worked with Steve on countless projects through my career. He was knowledgeable about every facet of construction, but moreover he was always positive and cheerful and I felt privileged to be working with him whenever our paths crossed. My condolences go out to his family and friends and I wish them the best through this loss.

I am so saddened to hear of Steve's passing. My son Grant and I had the honor of being his neighbor for 9 years and we couldn't have asked for anyone better. He was so kind and always doing for others. I would wake up on storm days to him snowblowing our driveway and we never had to ask, he just did it out of the kindness of his heart. As a single full-time working mom this kindness was always so appreciated. He will be so missed by all that knew him. He really did bring light to the world! My condolences to all that loved him.

I am SO stunned & saddened by this news. Steve was one of the kindest & best friend a person could have. He was clearly a dedicated family man. I go back 45+ years with him when he first came to Durango with a group of Army friends. They visited Durango while serving at Ft. Huachuca AZ and all decided to move here after they got out of the Army. He settled right in and was known and LOVED! Heartbroken for his family.

Joan and I were extremely shocked and saddened by the news of Steve´s accident. He worked with us for many years. He was one of our favorite people and was famous for his boisterous laugh and positive attitude he brought in each day. He loved his family more than anything. Every time I saw recently was spent getting caught up the kids and grandkids. He beamed with such love and pride talking about them. He lived life to the fullest and we are grateful for the times we had together. Our sincere condolences to Laura and the family.

I worked with Steve for many years and agree, his laugh would light up the room. Steve was one of the best transportation/construction inspectors I've had the privilege to work with. My condolences to Laura and family, he will be missed by many.
