Robert Fitts Obituary

On Friday, December 18, 2015, Dr. Robert Fitts, local Chiropractor, passed away suddenly at his home in Durango. Robert was a passionate Buddhist practitioner, meditation student, dedicated doctor, and loving father and friend.

As the only child of a NASA safety engineer, Robert and his parents lived in a number of states throughout his childhood. He attended both the University of New Mexico and the University of Colorado in Boulder earning a degree in religious studies. After a short stint living in Durango in 1979, he headed to chiropractic school in Atlanta, Georgia.

He graduated from Life University in 1983 as a Doctor of Chiropractic and moved to Boston, Massachusetts where he set up his first chiropractic office. In Boston, he met and married his wife Victoria Milgrim. In 1991, they had a daughter Natasha, whom he adored.

In 1995, they moved to Durango and Dr. Fitts opened his first clinic on 13th St next to Buckley Park. He eventually moved his office, Shambhala Chiropractic, to CR 250 across from Bread Bakery. During his twenty years in Durango, he loved to ski, road bike, play tennis, raft and hike frequently on Animas Mountain. He was a glorified foodie and chef, as well as a dedicated caretaker of his family's beautiful German shepherd, Lupine.

He is survived by his daughter Natasha Fitts of Denver and Victoria FittsMilgrim, his former wife of Durango.

A Celebration of Life will be held at St. Marks Church, on 3rd Ave and 9th St this Sunday, December 27 at 3pm. A reception will follow in the Parish Hall until 7pm.

In lieu of flowers, Robert's family suggests donations to the Durango Sangha, in care of Linda Barnes, PO Box 1631, Durango, CO 81302.

"Breathe it all in, and love it all out" - Dr. Robert Fitts
Thank you for encouraging my gifts to shine through to be the Yogini I am and share therapeutic stretching and privates with your clients. Thank you for starting our work sessions with a sitting practice and indulging my bringing in essential oils. We had some good times and a lot of laughs and managed to bounce back from irritating each other when we realized It's not worth losing your peace. During the time I have known you, I saw you living your life fully. You were following your dreams and your heart with fierce loyalty and dedication. I will remember your generosity, encouragement, and faith in me. Thank you! K-Lea Gifford

Robert, My dear Friend of over 46 years. Serene and always a smile that was the marquee of his diamond spirit. Natasha was his shining mountain. His love of Victoria never wavered. We love you Robert.

So so sorry to hear of Robert's passing. It was a great joy to be in I-group with him for several years, to be a patient, and to be a friend. He was a lovely man, and my heart is deeply saddened for Victoria and Natasha. I know Robert's soul is in joyful union with All-That-Is,

With a deep bow and much love,

Geoff Laughton

Such a shock to hear of the passing of Dr. Fitts. He loved his job and he sure kept me healthy. Loved visiting with him and seeing Lupine during my visits. He will be sorely missed.

Natasha, I was a patient of Dr. Fitts and he shared his love of you and his pride over flowed when he talked about you. I am so sorry for your loss and our loss as well. My husband and I will miss him and his help with our health. Know we are praying for you. Dixie and Bob Cherry
