Monty Moore Obituary

Monty Moore: stuntman, Warrior, father, and ardent lover of life and sport, left this sphere kicking and fighting on Good Friday, April 14, 2017, at 12:45 a.m., after his 7 year battle with cancer. He was born April 3, 1952, in Wichita Falls, Texas to Aubrey Eugene (Gene) Moore and Mary Pauline Marshall Moore. He attended Wichita Falls High School participating in football where he and his teammates distinguished themselves by winning the Texas State Championships in 1969, and Monty was All-Conference on both of the offensive and defensive side of the ball. He was then offered and accepted a full football scholarship to the University of New Mexico where he acquired a Bachelors Degree in Communications, and while there once again distinguished himself enough to be drafted into the World Football League and also spent time with the Houston Oilers. After his playing days in pro football came to a close he spent time in various activities including water skiing where he was a member of the Tommy Bartlett Water Show as a barefoot skier and stuntman. He ultimately transitioned to Hawaii where he made his home for several years, and while there enjoyed a variety of adventures including one of the original Hobie Cat franchisees, participated in the Iron Man Competition, won the Hawaii State Arm Wrestling Championships, and most importantly, joined the Hollywood Stuntmens Association. As a stuntman in Hawaii he was the stand-in and stunt double for Tom Selleck on the very popular television series Magnum PI. While in Hawaii in 1984, he married Yonna

Cromeens and in 1986 Maris Makena was born. In 1990 the family moved to Durango, where Monty partnered in the Durango Mountain Bike Camps for several years and in the winter months helped to develop the Snow Bike program at Purgatory, as well as volunteering time with the Adaptive Sports in their winter and summer programs. The summer programs allowed him to share his water skiing prowess. He created and operated Monty's Moore For Less, a contracting business in Durango, for 20 years. Yonna and Monty amicably divorced in 2010. Several months later Monty was diagnosed with cancer. For his last seven years Monty has enjoyed his relationship with Anne Marron. Monty loved his friends, mountain biking, skiing, river sports, spending time with friends at Lake Powell, and enjoyed several sailing trips overseas to Thailand, Turkey and Greece. Monty is survived by his daughter Maris Makena Moore, father, Gene, his sister, Paula (Jerry) Vaughn all of Wichita Falls, a niece, Kristi, (Danny) and son Keyton and daughter Jennifer, a nephew Brian (Lisa) Moore, and children Maya and Aiden. His family and friends are welcome at a Celebration of Life at Steamworks Restaurant, of which he was an investor, Monday, April 17th, during the hours of 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Rest In Peace my friend. Met Monty in Albuquerque where we played football together. We were roommates in the dorm and then shared an apartment together. Even rented a bedroom to him after I got married. Was the best man in my wedding in Ruidoso and boy did we have a bachelor party. We were always together in college and he was always taking care of me. Monty was always having to step in and protect me when my big mouth got me in trouble. Monte would greet people with "Hey Hotrod" so everyone started calling us "Hotrod and Minibike". Rest In Peace Monte Moore and thank you for your friendship.

So saddened today to hear Monty passed away recently. I met him around '75 at the College Inn where we both lived. He was a coaching assistant for the Lobos football team at the time and I was a senior yr student at UNM. We dated for a few months and he always made everything so much fun. I remember a party we went to and dancing - him lifting me high up in the air! Driving home late at night with another couple in his Cutlass on a snowy road downhill - just for fun he stepped on the brake and did a few donuts - luckily we were the only car on the road!! I recall the poster-sized photo he had on the wall of him waterskiing with someone standing on his shoulders! He seemed to live a charmed life and had such a sense of adventure, and always a gentleman. I loved his Texas accent and his laugh - how he would say "Oh my dear!!" and "Holy Mackerel". Thinking of him all these years (40+) later still puts a smile on my face. Last time I saw him it was in '76 when we ran into eachother at Ned's on Central in Albuq. Even though I was with my fiance (my now husband of 40 yrs) we gave eachother a big hug. RIP Monty Mann Moore and thank you for the fond memories. You were one of a kind and will be greatly missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing you. My heartfelt condolences to his family.

Rest easy Monty. We had a lot of fun times so many years ago in Wichita Falls, Muenster and Durango. Monty was adventurous, generous and entertaining, to say the least. I can visualize many moments from the past but one comes to mind from Muenster when Monty decided to stand up on one of the buffaloes on the ranch! Kind thoughts to his family and friends.

Monty was larger than life! My earliest memory had to be when I was about 7 or 8, we were home to Grannies and he would take me with him in his old car, we went for parts to some old junk yard. We had a ball! Allways made time for the cousins!
Remember when Ganny died, we were goin through her pictures and there was a professional head shot of Monty with his Magnum mustache and curly hair to go with it! Regret life getting in the way later and not making time to go see him.
See you again Cousin!

THE LAST TIME THAT I saw Monty was at Ron Jackson's lake house at Possum Kingdom Lake. Ron, Monty and all of us were sitting around arm wrestling each other. Monty and I shared the fact that we both liked to barefoot ski. He and I compared techniques of barefoot skiing. Oh, by the way, Monty beat me at arm wrestling. He was a great guy.

i met Monty at the YMCA weight room dungeon when i was 16 lifting weights. Monty was already off at University of New Mexico playing football. He was built like Arnold S. He was so nice and showed me some great tricks he had learned working out that i still use today and have shared with many people over the decades, usually giving Monty Moore the credit for their source.
A few years later Monty was in town for the summer from college, as i was, and we worked at the same construction sight. We had mutual friends and became long time friends. Monty WAS a warrior and i saw that warrior in action many times.
he always had a kindred spirit and a fantastic smile. Later in the late 80's Monty and Yonna would sometimes stay with us at our lake house at PK. Of course, Monty had to find some cliff to dive off of.
The last time i saw Monty was over 20 years ago. I was in Durango skiing, called him and said i want to eat dinner with you. He said great, but i'll also meet you on the slopes tomorrow. Monty said I'll find you. i was on the slopes about 2 pm with my 2 daughters 8 and 10 years. We were midway down a hill stopped for a break. i heard this guy yelling looked up and Monty came over the top of the mountain full speed approximately 20 yards in air landed slid next to me and said..."HEY JACKSON!"

That trip was the last time i saw Monty and that is the way i will always will remember Monty, flying thru the air.

He was a true warrior and stud among studs. I have thought often of Monty over the years and one of my deepest regrets is that i did not stay in contact with him. He was truly one of a kind. Rest in peace brother. My sincerest sympathies and prayers are with his family.

I remember Monty as being one of the sweetest, most respected guys at Old High, but so humble. I was privileged to be called his friend. He was always happy, living life to the fullest. You were loved by so many and you'll definitely be missed, Monty.

I have a problem with Monty Moore...I did not get to be his Bud long enough. I met Monty and Yonna at Possum Kingdom Lake in the mid 80's and we became fast friends. I have never known a happier human in my life and am extremely proud that he referred to me as his "brother". photo of Mont behind my boat, I took it, framed it and gave it to him for his birthday one year.

Rest in peace my Man, save me a place, we'll meet again!

I will always remember the reunion that I was at one end of the pool wthh about 100 people between us when I heard a loud voice scream Harris1. IU looked and there was Monte with a big smile on hi face ( he seemed to always have one). We talkd for about 20 mins about how or lives had taken so many of the same turs. He was working with children on bicycles and I was social worker with an adolescent motorcycle group. But his smile and laughter were a part of his personality that never left. I look forward to laughing with again in his rightful place in heaven. Until then , I will hear that laugh all of the time. See you soon.

Two weeks ago, I ran into Monty at the top of Purgatory Resort. He was skiing and he was having a great time. I feel so privileged that I had the chance to give him a big hug. Monty was my peer at the Purgatory ski school. He was a great instructor and he was fun. He is in our hearts forever. Deepest sympathy Yonna, Maris and the family. Marie-France

Monte was an amazing person and friend of 47 years. I do not know of anyone who was so giving of his infectious love of life. What a legacy and blessing who left this life too early.
