Michelle Wennerstrom Obituary

Michelle Alexander Wennerstrom passed away at 54 years old on November 30th of 2023.

Michelle (Mitch) was born in Denver, Colorado to Ron Alexander and Dorothy Rubner on August 9th, 1969. She grew up in Delta, Colorado, where she graduated high school. She then ventured to Durango, Colorado where she graduated from Fort Lewis College. After marrying Robert Wennerstrom, they had two children together, Kira Wennerstrom Gullion (Jacob Gullion), and Paige Wennerstrom. While renovating houses, raising two little girls, and teaching, Mitch earned her master's degree in English education. While studying at Fort Lewis, she enjoyed performing in numerous theatre productions, and flourished in every roll she was given. As much as she enjoyed acting, she felt her calling was educating younger generations.

After teaching at Piedra Vista High School, she moved on to educate the children of Bayfield Middle School. For over 20 years, she taught the value of kindness and empathy through resolution of hate. By instructing her students to write a letter to forgive any hatred they harbored, she instilled the power of forgiveness to thousands of young men and women.

Through her education career, she has gained many friends. Her colleagues all agree she could light up the room with her laugh and smile. Even through the hard times, she couldn't help cracking a joke to lighten the mood. We will all miss her loving personality and laugh.

Mitch is survived by her children Kira Gullion and Paige Wennerstrom, son-in-law (Jacob Gullion), parents Dorothy Rubner and Ron Alexander (stepmother Joanne Fagan), sisters Rhonda Han (David) and Shannon Gancy (Tim), boyfriend John Schmier, nieces Dana Han, Emily Gancy, Samantha Gancy, and nephews Matt Han and Nicholas Gancy. She is also survived by several friends and family, all who cared very much for her.

Michelle was the epitome of generosity, hard work, and selflessness. She would consistently go out of her way to help her children, family, and friends. Her kind heart has touched the lives of countless individuals.

In liu of flowers, please buy a gift for a teacher or loved one, as gifting to others was her favorite thing to do. Donations can also be made in her honor to the John Zay house. The Zay house took amazing care of her family while they visited and gave her a comfortable place to call home for her last few days.

The family wishes to thank Dr.Murphy and the staff of Common Spirit in Colorado Springs and Three Springs for saving her life. Thanks to these individuals, we were able to see her for one last precious month.

A celebration of life is being planned in the spring of 2024. Please reach out to Kira Gullion for details.

Ahhh Ms. Wennerstrom, as a middle school teacher now, (this year teaching English) there is rarely a year that passes where I don´t think about you and the little things I´ve picked up from you in your middle school English class. Thanks for everything. You will be missed.

Ms. Wennerstrom was one of my favorites teachers in that crazy time called middle school. She was one of the few that treated me as a person when no one else was, she saw who I could be and pushed me to be better. I´m am deeply saddened by the loss of this amazing person. My thoughts are with her family.

I have memories of Michelle going back to our early teens. I have more recent memories, but for some reason I'm remembering sitting in her bedroom, helping her with a contest in a Seventeen magazine. The contest was submitting creative names for finger nail polish. One of her ideas for a name was "Tequila Sunrise". We laughed about that one. I'll never forget her laugh. I can hear it now.

My first memory of my beautiful Aunt Michelle when we came to visit her in Colorado. We were driving down her old road, one thing led to another and the next thing I was doing was driving. I remember being so excited to finally drive a car at the ripe age of 5 years old. I sat on her lap, driving the car as she pressed on the gas/break and guided the wheel. Kira and Paige were in the back, fearing that I was going to drive us into the ditch. Luckily that didn´t happen, but Aunt Michelle has always been the amazing, cool, crazy, fun Aunt and will always be but forever in our hearts. I love you
