Kurt Trautmann Obituary

Kurt Trautmann, aged 66, passed away in Albuquerque NM on April 28, 2023 from complications of a brain tumor. He is survived by his father Robert Trautmann of Black Mountain NC; daughter Rexanne Trautmann of Durango CO, and Fort Collins CO; sister Cynthia Keyes of Atlanta GA; sister Gretchen Trautmann of Asheville NC; sister Sarah Trautmann of Lubec ME; brother In law Kurt Galloway of Athens GA; nephews Karl, Steven, and Daniel, niece Emma Rose, and former spouse Cindi Cone (Trautmann). He was pre-deceased by his mother Patricia Trautmann and his sister Elaine Trautmann.

Kurt was a free spirit, a lover of life, laughter and excellent food and wine. He was the owner and chef of the Aspen Cafe in Durango for many years in the early 2000s. He loved nothing better than to spend a day with his bare feet in the dirt, growing flowers and vegetables, cooking a wonderful meal at the end of the day. He loved to travel, especially through the countryside, always wondering what was down some old dirt road, and never hesitating to follow the trail to find out! He was supremely hilarious and had everyone in stitches most of the time with his zany humor. He was an excellent skier. He loved his horses in his early life, and his many cats and dogs throughout the years. The love of his life was his daughter, who was there for him, holding his hand as he passed to the other side.

He always said he wanted someday to be buried in the dirt without a box, to return to the earth so that the earth could be fed and grow new things where he lay. He will be buried at La Puerta Natural Burial Ground in Belen, NM. Arrangements by Salazar Mortuary in Albuquerque NM

I knew Kurt back in our formative years in Berea, OH and am very sad to see the news. I fondly recall an outstanding guy with an infectious laugh - what a wonderful obituary and testimony to a life well lived. Namaste my old friend.

Kurt was a wonderful man. He and I dated for a couple of years in the early 90s and had we shared some great adventures in that time. He was kind, funny, a great skier, excellent chef, and lover of spontaneous road trips! My heart goes out to his family and it is my hope that your time with him gave you many wonderful memories to remember all the good times. I will never forget Kurt and how he opened my eyes to new food, new places, and new friends. He cooked an amazing BBQ dinner for my visiting family in 1994 and they still talk about how good that was and how kind it was of him to do for us. Rest in Power my friend. You will be missed, and when I ski, I will ski some of your favorite runs for you. Thanks for all the good times Kurt!

Sending heartfelt hugs to the Trautmann family. Hoping that his wonderful life and memories carry you through this hard loss. We enjoyed a backyard BBQ with the family in Durango when Rexanne was in elementary school.

I met Kurt when he became the head chef at Purgatory a long time ago. We became friends immediately. He worked wonders there, but soon left. His Aspen Cafe was also a hit. Then I followed him to Nature's Oasis, where he worked his magic in the kitchen. Such a good man, and friend. You will be missed, my friend.
