Kathleen Truby Obituary

Kathleen Grace (Koeteeuw) Truby, 96, passed away peacefully with family by her side on January 5, 2024. Born April 27, 1927 to Frank and Hattie Koeteeuw, Kathy grew up with her sister Virginia in Denver, Colorado. Kathy attended Denver University where she earned a degree in mathematics (at a time when few women attended college and fewer were math majors). She was the vice president of her sorority and a member of Pi Delta Theta, an honorary mathematics fraternity. Kathy met her husband Lester Truby while working at an ice cream parlor in Grand Lake, CO. They married in 1948 and their true love lasted 66 years until Les passed in 2014.

With Les working in the oil field, they made homes in Louisiana, Utah, New Mexico, and Texas spending much of their lives together raising their boys in El Paso, Texas - becoming central to each and every community to which they belonged.

Kathy and Les built a home in Bayfield, CO in 1981 and spent nearly 40 years living among the San Juan Mountains. In retirement, Les and Kathy traveled, attended Elder Hostels, and were central figures in the lives of their grandchildren as they grew up. In Bayfield, Les and Kathy were extremely active members of Calvary Presbyterian Church and enjoyed hosting and entertaining. Kathy was an incredible cook and baker, boasting an impressive collection of recipes and cookbooks that all her family and guests were able to enjoy. Seeing Kathy's face light up the kitchen window overlooking the mountains was a welcome sight to all who visited. In 2022, she moved to Golden, CO to be closer to family.

Kathy will be remembered for her extraordinary intelligence, her unwavering warmth and generosity, and the coffee cake she always had at the ready for expected and unexpected guests. She was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother.

Her memory will be cherished by her sister Virginia Giroue, her children: Charles (Jessica) Truby and Russell (Cynthia) Truby, daughter-in-law Cynthia M. Truby, her 4 grandchildren: Zachary Truby, Lauren K. Truby (Kyle Maxwell-Doherty), Alexandria Truby, Rebecca Truby, and by her cherished friends Pam and John Patton. She was predeceased by her husband, Lester Truby, and her son, L. Scott Truby.
