Edward Don Obituary

Third-generation Durango native Edward James Don died at his home in Durango on September 7, 2016 after a 2-yr struggle with cancer. He was born in Durango on June 30, 1947 to Leslie James & Evelyn Don & graduated from Durango High School in 1965. After briefly attending Fort Lewis College, he enlisted in the Navy in January 1967 and served four years as a jet engine mechanic on aircraft carriers during the Vietnam War. After returning to Durango, he worked for Western Weather Consultants as a cloud seeding technician, building and installing silver iodide generators and weather instruments throughout western CO in the 1970s and early 1980s. He also worked as a builder and property manager at Cascade Village, later forming his own property managing business for homes primarily in north La Plata County.

Ed was a natural athlete who loved outdoor activities, especially skiing. He started skiing at age 4 and was Durango's winter carnival prince at the 3rd Ave Ski Course (now Chapman Hill) in 1958. He joined the junior ski team the following yr and always placed well in local ski races and jumping competitions. The thrill of downhill skiing became a lifelong pursuit, and some of his closest friendships were with his ski buddies. People who knew him will remember him for his honesty, integrity and generosity. His clients will remember him for his loyalty, dependability and skill at being able to fix anything. He liked people and was well liked by everyone who knew him.

Ed is survived by his partner, wife & best friend of 30 yrs, Barbara Prose, his sister Dorothy (Skip) Sparry of Plano, TX, 3 nieces and 3 nephews. He was predeceased by his parents and his brother, Leslie Alan Don. Cremation has occurred and no services are planned in honor of his wishes. Memorial contributions can be made to Hospice of Mercy.

In the late 70's or early 80's Ed, Bob McDaniel and I skied the backside of Sultan head and down to Mineral creek. A great skier and great person, I'm sure he's turning them both ways up in heaven! RIP Ed.
