Dennis McAfee Obituary

Part-time Bayfield resident Dennis B. McAfee died suddenly Wednesday, Aug. 28, 2013, at his summer home in Bayfield. He was 72.

Known as "Doc," he was born to Wallace and Inola McAfee on July 7, 1941, in Deming, N.M. One of three boys, he grew up on a ranch in Ignacio, graduating from Ignacio High School in 1959.

Mr. McAfee earned his undergraduate degree in wildlife biology and his doctorate in veterinary medicine from Colorado State University in Fort Collins in 1972.

Dr. McAfee owned a small animal private practice for 38 years in the north Denver metro area. He retired in 2009.

On April 23, 1993, he married Susan Schuldheis in Westminster.

"Doc enjoyed all sports and excelled at tennis," according to his family. "Dennis was an avid fly-fisherman. He loved watching his Broncos, running the Bolder Boulder and the great outdoors."

Dr. McAfee is survived by his wife of 20 years, Susan McAfee of Bayfield and Westminster; daughters Tracey Broden of Littleton, Christi McAfee of Broomfield and Julie McAfee of Telluride; brother D.L. McAfee of McAlester, Okla.; five grandchildren; and numerous nephews, nieces, cousins and extended family members.

A celebration of life will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 28, 2013, at Westminster Christian Church, 3575 West 96th Ave., in Westminster. A memorial service will be held in summer 2014 in Bayfield.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to the CSU Foundation for the Veterinary Teaching Hospital Fund 48103, P.O. Box 1870, Fort Collins, CO 80522; or a charity of one's choice.
