Clinton Barter Obituary

Clinton R. Barter, Jr. passed away in Fort Myers, Florida on June 10, 2024. Dr. Barter was born in Portland, Maine on August 17, 1934. He was superintendent of schools in Brown Deer, Wisconsin, Bemidji, Minnesota, Manhasset and Plainedge, New York. After retiring in 1997, he moved to Colorado when his wife Mary became Durango's superintendent of schools.

Clint loved the outdoor life but also made significant contributions to the community as a founding member of LaPlata Boys & Girls Club and Durango Big Brothers Big Sisters. He was on the boards of the Adult Education Center and Southwest Mental Health Center (Axis) and actively supported Music in the Mountains and Fort Lewis College.

After Mary retired in 2008, the couple purchased a second home near family in Fort Myers, Florida, moving there full time when Clint was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease in 2017. When home care could not meet his needs, he moved to assisted living. At the end, rejecting further medical intervention, he died peacefully in hospice. He is survived by his wife Mary, his sons Steven (Susan) and Daniel (Debra), his step daughter Molly Rockafellow, five grandchildren, and four siblings.

Cremation has occurred. A celebration of life will be held in Gray, Maine on August 17, 2024.

I met Clint through my association with Mary and found him to be a brilliant and funny person. His jokes about them both being doctors and how they would handle random phone calls still crack me up. I'm going to miss your zucchini bread. Rest in peace, good sir!
