John Allen Obituary

Mystic - John E. Allen III, 72, lovingly known to his daughters as Dad, to the younger generations as Poppy, and to many as Papa John, passed away peacefully, March 7, 2026, after a courageous battle with cancer. John was born Sept. 18, 1953, in Southington, to John E. Allen Jr. and Julia MacLeod.

He grew up in southeastern Connecticut and graduated from Ledyard High School with the Class of 1972. Shortly after graduation, John proudly enlisted in the United States Air Force. After completing his service, he returned home to Connecticut where he pursued the trades. He was a long-standing member of the UA Plumbers and Pipefitters Local 777 and worked in a variety of capacities both on site as general foreman and project manager, as well in office as an estimator for Base Mechanical for much of his career. He was Plumbing and HVAC Piping superintendent for over 33 years until his retirement.

John spent most of his life living in Mystic, which he loved dearly. Known for his incredible attention to detail and innate ability to create and construct anything one could dream up, he took great pride in his work and helping others. Whether he was on a job site or helping family and friends with projects, John was always willing to lend a hand and to share his wisdom with a subtle suggestion that started as, "Ya know what you ought to do."

He had a deep love for the ocean, the sound of the waves, relaxing in the sun, traveling with friends, time spent having fun and sharing laughs with family and friends. He loved celebrating good times and making memories. Traveling and sharing experiences with loved ones brought him much happiness.

Above all, John's greatest joy was expressed through his family. His loving devotion to his daughters and grandchildren kept his schedule full of family time creating memories that will forever be cherished.

He is survived by his two daughters, Christa Allen of Lyme, and Katie Allen of Mystic; his grandchildren, Gregory Allen, Shyla Jones and Mason Jones: along with his great-grandchild Bayleigh Allen. He is also survived by his two brothers, Roger Allen and his wife Eunice and David Allen; a sister, Tammy Doucette, and her husband John; along with many beloved nieces and nephews.

John will be deeply missed by all who knew him. His warm smile, easygoing nature, and the lessons he shared with others will live on in the hearts of those who loved him.

His family will receive relatives and friends from 10 a.m. to noon Sunday, March 15, at the Mystic Funeral Home located on Route 1 in Mystic. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a cancer foundation of your choosing.
