John Lovell Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Greely Funeral Home on Oct. 21, 2025.
John R. Lovell, 74, of Rockport passed away peacefully surrounded by family on October 12, 2025 at Oceanside Rehabilitation and Nursing Center.
He was born in Glendale, California on July 17, 1951, son of the late Robert C. Lovell and Marie Louise Nodler.
John grew up in South Pasadena, CA, where his stepmother, Ione Lovell, was a central figure in his life. Later, he moved to Illinois to study at Wheaton College, where he met many lifelong friends. He made his way to Cape Ann in the mid-70s where he met the love of his life, Allison, and put down roots at the Orthodox Congregational Church of Lanesville. He was proud to be an Eagle Scout, a 40-year member of the Walker Creek Band, and a lifelong lover of music, literature, art, and nature. His sharp intellect was outshone only by his lovingkindness and passion for life.
John formed profound, meaningful relationships with a great many people in his life. He worked for 18 years at EBSCO in Ipswich, where he developed strong, lasting friendships. He battled Parkinson's disease for 15 years and was supported by so many family and friends, as well as new ones that he made along the way. John will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
He is survived by his beloved wife Allison; son Sean and wife Duyen Lovell; son Cameron and wife Kim Lovell; daughter Jessie and husband William Alexander; son Robin Lovell; and treasured grandchildren Madeline, Olivia, John and Liam; brother James (Jim) Lovell, half-sister Jean Lopez, and step brother Robert (Bobby) Shaw; nieces Jewelea and Justina; as well as many friends and extended family members.
John's Memorial Services will be held at the Lanesville Congregational Church, 1120 Washington Street, Gloucester, on Saturday, October 25, 2025, at 11:00am. Relatives and friends are invited to attend. Arrangements by the Greely Funeral Home, 212 Washington Street, Gloucester. For online condolences, please visit www.greelyfuneralhome.com
