James Cassels Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Colonial Funeral Home of Irving on Feb. 23, 2025.
James William Cassels, a beacon of kindness and generosity, passed away peacefully at his son's house in The Colony, Texas, on February 17, 2025, while surrounded by family. Born on September 23, 1937, in Dallas, Texas, to J. W. and Doris Cassels. James's life was a testament to the power of thoughtfulness and community spirit.
James grew up in Grand Prairie and later attended the University of North Texas, where he laid the foundations for his future endeavors. He was a self-made businessman, who started his own company in 1965 which he grew to have warehouses locally and internationally. His commitment to serving others was evident early on. Prior to starting his business, he served as a firefighter for the Reserves. Through his work, he exemplified bravery and selfless concern for the well-being of his fellow citizens.
For 53 years, James was a loving husband to his beloved wife, Fran Cassels, who predeceased him. He was a loving father to his sons, Greg and James, and a caring father-in-law to Laury. His role as a grandfather to Collin, Lexi, Austin, Bryce, and Landyn Cassels was filled with joy and pride, and he cherished his moments with Austin Mateo Cassels, Jr., his new born great-grandson. James's love extended to his nieces, nephews, cousins, and the many lives he touched.
Over the years he served as a Deacon at St. Mark's Episcopal Church, where he found spiritual solace and a community of like-minded individuals. His faith was reflected in his everyday actions and in the way he interacted with those around him. A man of varied interests, James had a passion for horse racing. His competitive spirit and dedication to the sport were evident as his horses were derby winners many times. This brought him immense pride and joy. His love for horses was more than a hobby; it was a reflection of his connection to nature and the thrill of competition. Beyond his personal achievements, James was deeply involved in community outreach. He served on the board of directors for the Irving Convention and Visitors Bureau. His work with Irving Cares allowed him to give back to the community he held dear. He believed in the power of community support and was always ready to lend a helping hand or a listening ear to those in need.
James's legacy is one of love, service, and commitment to his family, friends, and community. He will be remembered as a kind, generous, and thoughtful man who left an indelible mark on the hearts of all who knew him. As we bid farewell to James William Cassels, we celebrate a life well-lived and a man who truly made a difference. His memory will continue to inspire those who were fortunate enough to have crossed paths with him, and his spirit will live on in the countless lives he enriched. Rest in peace, James. You will be dearly missed but never forgotten.
