William Holway Obituary
Former La Plata County resident William Richard Holway died Friday, Aug. 20, 2010, in Casa Grande, Ariz. He was 85.
Known as "Dick," he was born to William N. and Blossie (Emmot) Holway on Oct. 1, 1924, on his parents' farm near Beloit, Kan. He grew up there, helping his father till the soil and care for the livestock.
On Oct. 15, 1944, he married Lola Lorene McHenry in Beloit. Hoping to work on a cattle ranch, Mr. Holway and his family moved to Gunnison in 1953.
Mr. Holway worked as herdsman for Gov. Dan Thornton on the ranch where he kept his show cattle. He stayed on the ranch when the Tom Livelys bought it.
In Gunnison, Mr. Holway was active as a 4-H leader, in Odd Fellows and in the community.
Years later, in 1970, the ranch was sold to developers, and Mr. and Mrs. Holway moved to Durango. Mr. Holway worked for James Ranch for a few years and then bought a house in Gem Village. He did various odd jobs before going to work for The Beef Cattle Improvement Association on the old Fort Lewis College Campus south of Hesperus. After his retirement in 1990, the Holways moved back to their home in Gem Village.
Mr. Holway worked for Harvey and Linda Cundiff on their family farm for several years before he and his wife moved to Casa Grande to be near their son Jerry.
Mr. Holway served as deacon for the Durango and Bayfield Churches of Christ. He made numerous wooden toys in his workshop at home and helped many people in the community.
Mr. Holway is survived by his wife of 65 years, Lola Holway, of Casa Grande; daughter, Linda Burton, of Hesperus; sons Michael Holway of Bakersfield, Calif., and Jerry Holway of Casa Grande; sisters Joye Eilert, Aileen McHenry and Fern Simpson, all of Beloit; eight grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
The immediate family had a living memorial with him before his death. Cremation will occur. Burial will take place in Beloit at a later date.
