Wayne Cope Obituary

Former Ignacio resident Wayne Dale Cope died Monday, June 10, 2013, at his home in Fitzhugh, Okla. He was 78.

Mr. Cope was born to William "Bill" and Helen Loman Cope on Nov. 5, 1934, in Ada, Okla. He graduated from Ada High School and earned bachelor's and master's degrees from East Central University in Ada, where he was a member of the East Central Tigers basketball team.

Mr. Cope moved to Ignacio in 1958, where he taught high school history and coached basketball and baseball. He moved back to Oklahoma in 1971.

On June 4, 1980, he married Brenda Mitchusson in Roff, Okla.

Mr. Cope coached baseball and basketball and was also the high school principal at Roff High School until his retirement. He was a member of the Fitzhugh Baptist Church.

Mr. Cope is survived by his wife of 33 years, Brenda Cope of Fitzhugh; daughters Karen Lefler of Fitzhugh and Sheri Haney of Ada; son, William "Wid" Cope, of Kingston, Okla.; stepdaughter, Robyn McCoy, of Fitzhugh; 10 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, June 13, 2013, at the Ada First Baptist Church. Burial will take place afterward at Rosedale Cemetery.

Mr. Cope was a wonderful teacher and coach for Ignacio High School. He spent time coaching and training Native American students to succeed in academics as well as sports, which was greatly needed because of cultural barriers in education at the time. Many will remember him fondly.
