Former Bayfield resident Wanda J. Cannon died of ovarian cancer at her home in Dolores on Sunday, April 5, 2009. She was 67.

Mrs. Cannon was born to Emmanuel D. and Sarah Ruth Brower in Charlotte, N.C., on Feb. 7, 1942.

On Dec. 28, 1960, she married John L. Cannon in Colorado Springs.

The couple moved from Cañon City to a farm on the Florida Mesa in 1976.

Mrs. Cannon was a homemaker for most of her life. She worked at Kroeger's Ace Hardware for a number of years, where her husband said she was the "paint lady."

Mrs. Cannon was a lifetime member of Epsilon Sigma Alpha sorority. She volunteered as a leader for 4-H, Brownies and Girl Scouts.

Mrs. Cannon enjoyed making cards, doing crafts and making jams and jellies. She was an avid rock hound who enjoyed being outdoors and camping.

Mrs. Cannon was an active member of whatever church she attended, including the Church of the Nazarene in Durango.

The Cannons moved to Dolores in 1983.

"Wanda was known for her warm smile, infectious laugh and her great faith," her family wrote.

Mrs. Cannon is survived by her husband of 48 years, John L. Cannon, of Dolores; son, Jim Cannon, of Bayfield; daughter, Jennifer McGuire, of Oxford, Ala.; sister Pat Redsell of Ottawa, Canada; five grandchildren; and numerous extended family members.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, April 10, 2009, at the Lodge of the Circle K Ranch, 27758 Colorado Highway 145, Dolores.
