Walter Leonard Obituary

Walter Leonard, the administrator who created an admissions process at Harvard University that was a framework for affirmative action, has died, according to The Associated Press. He was 86.

Leonard died Dec. 8 in Kensington, Maryland, of complications of Alzheimer's disease, said his wife, Betty Leonard. The couple lived in Chevy Chase, Maryland.

In 1971, Leonard was named as a special assistant to Harvard President Derek Bok. Leonard had already worked as an assistant dean and assistant director of admissions at Harvard Law School, where he was credited with increasing the number of black, Latino and female students.

The admissions formula he created for Harvard included race or ethnicity as one of many factors that could weigh in a prospective student's favor. Other universities copied the affirmative-action policy.

"The Harvard model provides a standard," Ronald Dworkin of the New York University School of Law wrote in an essay for "The Affirmative Action Debate," a 2002 book. "If the admissions officers of other universities are satisfied that their plan is like the Harvard plan in all pertinent respects, they can proceed in confidence."

Leonard was born Oct. 3, 1929, in Alma, Georgia. At age 15, he enlisted in the U.S. Coast Guard during World War II.

In 2011, Leonard and Bok were awarded Harvard Law School's highest honor, the Medal of Freedom.

Dear Mrs. Leonard
Please accept our heartfelt condolences on the passing of your husband, Walter. We have only just discovered this information after finding a collection of Christmas cards my husband had received and meticulously saved. We have enjoyed re-reading them over the years and had just decided to start a tradition to read one at each gathering of our family. That lead us to search the internet to see where you and Dr. Leonard are currently located and we're shocked to learn of his demise. Please know that you have family here in Florida.

Dear Betty and Angela
I only recently learned of Walter's passing. What a loss not only to our community, but also to our nation. A loving husband and father plus a good friend to Kellis I am glad they had a chance to connect before Kellis' death.
I remember with fondness Kellis and I sharing cake with you and Walter one Christmas Eve. May loving memories give comfort to you and Angela during this sad time.

Dear Mrs. Leonard,
I wanted to share my heartfelt sympathy to you and your family. I hope you remember me. My name is Legoria (Vernon) Payton. I attended Fisk and sang soprano in the Fisk Jubilee Singers from 1976-1981. I can remember when the Singers came to your home on campus. We still talk about the food and great hot chocolate that you served us that evening. You always were so kind to me and always made time to chat with me which made me feel so special. It is my humble prayer that the Lord will continue to bless, keep and comfort you and your family. Fisk Forever! Sincerely, Legoria

I first met Walter Leonard the morning of his first day at Harvard Law School. I worked for him for two years and with him in decades thereafter. He was my mentor, teacher and most of all a best friend. He celebrated my successes and encouraged me in defeat. He had a calm manner but was as tough as steel.

We stayed in touch over the decades. Every time he called me he would start with "Sam I was thinking about you so I thought I would give you a call". That was his way of letting me know how much he cared and he cared for so many.

Walter Leonard's legacy lives on in the many lives he touched and the institutions he changed for the better. I miss him so much.
