Tyler Gordon Obituary

Tyler Keith Gordon, 21, died from a fall on May 27, 2015 while climbing in Yosemite National Park, he was climbing a route on El Capitan called The Nose. Tyler was on a one year climbing adventure which had taken him to Europe, Utah, and California before he was to attend graduate school at University of British Columbia in Vancouver this fall.

Tyler was born July 10th, 1993 in Sharon, CT, to Connie Gordon and Douglas Gordon. He moved to Durango at a young age. Tyler soon took up rock climbing, a result of his passion for both the outdoors and problem solving. Tyler attended Durango High School where he graduated in 2011 with a 4.0 average. He graduated from University of Colorado, Boulder, in three years, receiving a Bachelor of Science in Applied Math, Magna Cum Laude, in 2014. Tyler quickly joined and attained the position of Officer in the CU Alpine Club. Tyler was a strong climber, mentor, leader and close friend to many in the club. "[I]f a climb was hard, or considered hard, you would just get through it and say it wasn't bad… you were truly nothing but a joy to be around," friend Sophia Di Biase said of Tyler's attitude toward climbing and life.

Tyler always saw things as they were, and moved through life with a calm mentality and steady resolve, subtly inspiring his friends with his genuine attitude. Along with his love for climbing and math, Tyler was a passionate baker. Lifelong friend Sarah Zemach says he believed "that pastries, like life and like people, are meant to be fully indulged in and fully enjoyed."

Tyler is survived by his younger brother, Bryce Gordon, his mother Connie, as well as grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins, and an enormous amount of friends far and near.

A Celebration of Life is planned for Tyler in Durango on August 1, location to be determined.

"God, what I would do for just one more slice of cake!"- Eddie Marovich, friend.

My condolences for your loss. Tyler worked for me at CU as a tutor- he was passionate, incredibly intellegent, and one of the kindest person I have had the pleasure of getting to know.
He brought me some of his fabulous cookies as a thank you for writing him letters of recommendation to graduate school. I was gifted with a visit from him just prior to his trip to CA. This kind of thoughtfulness is rare- he was a true gem.
My heart aches for you, and has grown from knowing him.
Blessings,
Karen Wyatt

He had the spirit of an eagle....he taught me about courage, he opened my eyes and my heart. It was such a privilege to have been Tyler's 2nd and 3rd grade teacher! He was such a climber... way back then.....we could not contain his passion...and had the wisdom to stand aside and let him inspire us! I shall always hold dear Tyler in a special place in my heart. His huge spirit will live on in all who have met him on the great journey of life. Blessings of love and joy to you, his precious family. love, Christie
