Rest in Peace old friend.
We knew and were closely associated with the Sheriff when he first moved to Durango. Both my grandfather and my dad and all my family knew him well.
I remember when he first joined the La Plata County Sheriff's Office and recall my dad talking with him in our driveway one evening and me thinking how perfect a fit that uniform was.
And I was right. Standing next to that patrol car, his Stetson hat on...
From that moment on, we knew he´d found it. And he had. For decades he found it, eventually ran it, and then, retired from it all.
He originally homesteaded in Lightner Creek when you could count the number of places along that road on your fingers. He was an avid hunter and a crack shot with a rifle, too.
Durango had a wonderful and genuine public servant that I´m sure was hard to replace.
The earth spins a little slower now...
Rest in Peace, Duke.

We had a pretty good run together over the past damn near 50 years, partner. Many bad guys, hunts, trips, adventures---all with the copius and constant, required, "laughing & scratching".
In the last several years, while we were separated by many miles, we were still as close to each other as two good ol' boys could ever be.
I will miss you, and "us" till the last roundup-----of course, I know when you headed out, the Boss sent you on the upper trail....I ain't too sure which fenceline He wants me to work.
