Susan VanDenBerg Obituary

Susan Sherry VanDenBerg, born on December 21, 1952, in New Bedford, Massachusetts, to Eleanor and William Kroudvird, passed away peacefully February 11th, 2025. She passed in her home after a 10-year battle with ovarian cancer and a life filled with passion and advocacy. She graduated from American University in 1974 and pursued a career as a court reporter.

In the 1980s, Susan moved to Durango, CO, where she married Alan Lee VanDenBerg and had a son, Logan William VanDenBerg. She enjoyed good food, live music, ceramics, skiing with friends, and her beloved animals.

Susan discovered her talent for pottery in college, becoming a skilled artist. Her work was sold in local stores and she continued creating beautiful pottery until the last six months of her life.

A lover of travel, Susan's favorite trips included visits to Israel, Thailand, and Mexico. She found relaxation in walking on beaches, swimming, and practicing yoga. Her last visit to Washington, DC, was for an Ovarian Cancer Research Alliance conference, where she shared her experiences with living with ovarian cancer to clinicians and researchers.

A staunch Democrat, Susan was a proud supporter of women's rights. She was a dedicated advocate for ovarian cancer patients, emphasizing the importance of cancer awareness and self-advocacy. She provided insight and guidance to other patients through peer-support groups.

Susan had many friends over seven decades of her life. Her radiant smile and bright spirit showed her love for friends and family. She deeply loved animals and had many dogs, cats, birds, rabbits, and horses throughout her life-providing companionship and comfort to her. Susan is survived by her son, Logan, and her poodle, Raffi.

Dear Logan, I saw your entry from March 25th. I am so sad and so sorry that you lost your mom. I met her in a Cancer Support Group in 2020. I too had ovarian cancer.
The retreat was online because of COVID. At the time I lived in Telluride and was in the process of building a house here in Edgemont Meadows. Ironically almost across the street from your mom. I saw her occasionally over the past 5 years and the last time was in November when we went out for lunch at Rubert´s. She loved their fries. I would also see her out here in the meadow behind my house with Raffi. We always had good conversations. I am sorry that I did not know her better but I know that she was a strong and determined woman. Today I walked on the trail behind her house and just felt an emptiness that I had not felt before as I passed by. When I came home I discovered that she had passed away.
If you are in need of someone to talk to or cry with please reach out to me. I am here for you. (I think as I recall you live in Denver and I am there fairly often.) I am a year younger than your mom. She was a wonderful person. You are lucky to have had her and you always will. Love, Lucinda

We enjoyed water aerobics years ago at trimble hot springs. Susan was always fun to see and catch up. She always mentioned Logan and how grateful she was for him.
