Steve will remain in our hearts forever. A gentle soul with a mischievous smile and a twinkle in his eyes. He even looked good in his cowboy boots and hat with short pants and whitest of white legs.

Childhood Memories of Steve Ancell

The Ancell family was among our good neighbors. My sisters, Jannet and Sharon, and I have many fond memories of our childhood years. We grew up near Bayfield, Colorado, with our grandparents, Raymond and Goldie Frame.

Another neighbor, Alfred Fraham, drove the school bus. Many school-day afternoons, he let Tommy, Steve, Mary, Jannet, Sharon, and me off at the junction of what is now County Road 523 and the Buck Highway. We´d walk up the hill to our homes. As we got older, that involved lugging books and various band instruments. Red-haired, freckled face Steve often entertained us with his jokes and imaginative stories.

The Ancell children, along with my sisters and me, attended Calvary Presbyterian Church. One Sunday, or maybe it was after the last day of our Vacation Bible School, Steve smuggled a piece of twine into church and sat behind his mother, Virginia. While the congregation was deep in prayer, Steve roped roses off his mother´s hat. Mrs. Ancell cut his trick-roping practice short when she took Steve by the arm and marched him outside. In the sanctuary´s stillness, we could hear his cries as she dispensed justice. Perhaps at that moment, many of us in church, depending on our ages, prayed for either Mrs. Ancell or Steve.

One morning Jannet and I walked down the lane to the Ancell´s home on an errand. While we were there, Steve showed us how to milk cows. Steve was so skilled-and so mischievous-he´d squirt milk directly from the cow to the rafters overhead. The warm milk dripped onto the heads of his unsuspecting pupils.

In the late summer, occasionally a gaggle of neighborhood kids floated down the ditch in inner tubes, eating ripe peaches, letting the juice spill down our chins.

We were all saddened when Tommy died in a farming accident. Mrs. Ancell told Grandma that Steve didn´t laugh for a long while afterwards. Then one day, during practice, Steve made a blurting sound on the tuba. The sound tickled Steve, and he laughed.

When Steve got older, he helped my grandfather bale hay. Grampa said Steve was a hard worker, a high compliment, indeed.

We moved away from Bayfield in 1965. We may not recall all the "facts" correctly from fifty-seven years ago, but we have fond memories of our neighbor Steve Ancell.

To Steve´s entire family, we send our deepest sympathies.

Sincerely,
"The Frame Girls"

Steve was the most welcoming neighbor when we moved in next door. He helped us with so many little things to get our property up and running. He was kind and thoughtful. He left such a lovely impression on our family. Sending you off with love in our hearts.

Steve was first and foremost a gentleman of all gentlemen. We spent both our entire careers together in Navy driving and navigating the USS Ponchatoula. I think about the great times and some not so great quite often. RIP my friend. Until we meet again.

I really only knew Steve through his daughter, Theresa, my son, Thomas, and my grandson, Steven. Steve was the very best father, father-in-law, and grandfather.
When a man like Steve passes, the memories of him will remain large as life and will always be a comfort to those who knew him intimately.
Rest in peace, Steve, and I salute you.
