Stanley Smith Obituary

Stan was a native Durangoan. He passed away May 25, 2017, in Pueblo Colorado. Stan was a descendent of 2 pioneer families that settled in the Animas City area. The Folsom family settled in the Durango area in 1883.

Stan's father, Stanley Wade Folsom, graduated from the Durango high school in 1934, which Stan graduated from in 1956. The Schaaf family came in the late 1890s. Stan's mother was a Schaaf. Stan's grandfather Alvin and wife, Edith had five children. Their only daughter, Marjorie Louise Schaaf, was Stan's mother. On April 11, 1937, Stanley married Margie Schaaf. Stan was born February 25, 1938. In 1940, Stanley and Margie divorced. Margie later married, Willard (Bill) Smith. Bill was a very fine father for Stan and later adopted him. After graduation Stan worked on the railroad. Married Marjorie and they had a daughter Sherri Denise. Stan then went into the Air Force . Being stationed in Thule, Greenland, for a year caused the dissolution of their marriage. Returning from Thule, Stanley was stationed in Cheyenne, Wyoming, where he met and married Barbara. They had Kenneth Loye. Stan went to work for the D&RGW railroad and worked for them 35 years. The railroad moved him from Durango to Alamosa, to Pueblo where he worked until he retired. Stan was quite the inventor. He loved to take his metal detector out and just roam the country looking for treasures. He also loved to garden and one summer he raised a tomato that weighed almost 3 pounds. Stan is survived by his wife Diane, of Pueblo his daughter Sherri, of Thorton, Colorado his son Kenneth, of Pueblo, his brother, Kayo Folsom, and sisters Debra Brittain, Wilma Zwygart, Veronica Folsom, his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Plus aunts and uncles, nieces and nephews and many cousins.

A celebration of life, with a military honor guard, will be held at 12 o'clock noon Saturday June 24, 2017, at the Folsom family cemetery on the old Folsom Ranch off the Florida Road. The family invites all Stan's family and friends to bring memories and stories that we might reminisce. Lunch will be provided at the family picnic grounds after the service.

Me and Stanley were really close friends I am very sorry for your loss

June 15, 2017

My thoughts and prayers to the family of Stan.. One of the best guys to work with on the railroad. If Stan was on the crew it was no longer a job but instead it was a lot of fun. I am so sorry his life has come to an end. I know, however, he has moved on to the next life and is making the Spirit World a lot better place to be. RIP Stan.
