Stanley Gill Obituary

Stanley Wayne Gill, owner of Mac's Liquor Store in Durango, died Monday, March 5, 2012, at Mercy Regional Medical Center after a long battle with MDS, also known as myelodysplastic syndrome. He was 73.

Mr. Gill was born March 28, 1938, to Wayne and Bertha Gill in Cañon City

He was raised in McCloud, Calif., and graduated from McCloud High School in 1956.

After high school, Mr. Gill worked for the U.S. Forest Service fighting forest fires in California until 1962. From 1962 until 1965,heserved in the U.S. Army.Part of his service was in Germany.

At the end of his military service, Mr. Gill returned to California, where he began working as a pressman for the Los Angeles Times from 1965 until 1979.

On Nov. 27, 1971, Mr. Gill married Sharon Kay Haefele in Lake Tahoe.

The couple moved to Durango in 1979, and Mr. Gill bought Mac's Liquor Store on 3124 Main Ave.

In the 1980s, Mr. Gill earned his pilot license for recreational use. He enjoyed flying small planes.He also enjoyed fishing, camping, hiking, skiing and playing golf.

Mr. Gill is survived by his wife of 40 years, Sharon Kay Gill, of Durango; daughters Stephanie Gill of Durango and Heather Esterday of Fort Collins; sister, Carole Robinett, of Coeur d'Alene, Idaho; and two grandchildren.

Cremation will occur.A memorial service will be held at a later date.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Hospice of Mercy, 1 Mercado St., Suite 270, Durango, CO 81301.
