Samuel Hostetler Obituary

Samuel Ray Hostetler, father of Durango resident Samuel Hostetler Jr., died in a car accident Sunday, July 18, 2010. He was 57.

Mr. Hostetler was born to Charles E. and Frances L. Hostetler on Sept. 20, 1952, in Longmont.

Mr. Hostetler worked most of his life for social services agencies. He loved working with children, the handicapped and the infirm, his family said. He was a transportation scheduler for Presbyterian Medical Services in Farmington and before that worked as a counselor for Blue Peaks Developmental Services in Alamosa.

Mr. Hostetler also was a gifted artist and spent a number of years working as a potter. He enjoyed hiking and camping in the mountains, tinkering with cars, and working on his model trains.

"Sam was a creative and compassionate human being," his family wrote. "He will be fondly remembered by family and friends as a cherished and beloved man. In remembrance – love the ones you love, be nice with those you meet, and celebrate nature as he did."

Mr. Hostetler is survived by his son, Samuel Hostetler Jr. of Durango; daughter, Heather Holt of Farmington; brothers Daniel Hostetler of Franktown and Richard Hostetler and Thomas Hostetler, both of Denver; stepmother, Kathleen Hostetler of Pueblo; stepbrothers Sam Geonetta of Cincinnati, John Geonetta of Broomfield and Mark Geonetta of Pueblo; and numerous extended family members.

A memorial service will be held at 7 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 28, 2010, at Sycamore Park, 1051 Sycamore St. in Farmington.
