Ruth McCaw Obituary

Lifelong Oxford-area resident Ruth M. McCaw died Saturday, Dec. 18, 2010, at Mercy Regional Medical Center from health complications. She was 89.

Mrs. McCaw was born to George and Elnora Lauten on June 29, 1921, in Oxford. She attended school in Oxford, then Durango, where she graduated in 1939. After graduation, she attended nursing school and graduated as a registered nurse in 1942. She married LeRoy McCaw in Texas.

Mrs. McCaw traveled the U.S. working in hospitals wherever her husband was stationed in the Air Force. They returned to Oxford in 1946 and started a successful dairy business, which they ran until retiring in 1986. Family members continue to run the ranch.

Mrs. McCaw loved her family and friends. She enjoyed being outside in the yard, garden or in "Grandma's Patches," which no one could irrigate quite like her, wrote her family. Numerous friends would stop by at "Coke Time" for a lively debate or to hear her political opinions.

Mrs. McCaw was preceded in death by her husband of 55 years, LeRoy McCaw, and a daughter, Patricia Barnes.

She is survived by her son, Jerry McCaw, of Oxford, four grandsons and 10 great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 22, 2010, at Hood Mortuary in Durango. Burial will be in the Florida Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to The Salvation Army, P.O. Box 3296 Durango, CO 81302.
