Ruby Sanders Obituary
Longtime Durango and Dolores resident Ruby Sanders died from complications of a stroke Wednesday, April 23, 2014, in Durango. She was 89.
Mrs. Sanders was born July 21, 1924, to Victor and Thelma Hodges, in their cabin in eastern Colorado. In the Depression and Dust Bowl of 1931, the family moved to Montezuma County.
In 1942 she married Amos Doyle Sanders, who came for the logging boom of McPhee, in Raton, New Mexico.
In March 1943, Mrs. Sanders raised their daughter, Darlene, and son, Eugene, while Mr. Sanders served in World War II. He returned, then the family joined him in Germany. They returned to Durango, then went to Japan, California and Nebraska. The Sanders returned to Durango in 1968.
After Mr. Sanders' death in 1978, Mrs. Sanders enrolled at Fort Lewis College, at age 54. Her son Dale also attended, and they studied together at the kitchen table.
She took her first professional job at Durango Medical, working there for 15 years. She also worked at the La Plata County Humane Society Thrift Store for 14 years.
"Mom was known for her enormously deep spirituality," according to her family. "She enjoyed her Bible study and Science of Mind groups, and studied Taoism and Buddhism, expanding her understanding of God and existence."
An insatiable reader, she read at least one novel per week. She also loved intricate, advanced coloring books.
She loved to walk and hike and was a fixture in her neighborhood of Crestview, making friends with everyone, traveling the streets with her dogs, including, for the last 12 years, her Yorky-terrier, Missy, according to her family.
She had a wonderful laugh, smile and sense of humor.
Mrs. Sanders was preceded in death by her husband, Amos Doyle Sanders, daughter, Linda Sue Sanders; and son, Eugene Sanders.
She is survived by her children Dale Sanders of Durango, Patricia McCarty of Phoenix, Darlene Sibigtroth of Parker and Paula Nabors of Humble, Texas; sister Yvonne Rule of Cortez; brother Victor Hodges of Dolores; and more than 50 grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.
A graveside service was held Saturday, April 26, 2014, at Summit Ridge Cemetery near Dolores. On or near July 21, a celebration will be held for her 90th birthday.
Memorial contributions may be sent to StarShine Academy, 3535 E. McDowell Road, Phoenix, AZ 85008; or any labor and delivery ward at the hospital of one's choice.
