Roy Robinson Obituary

Durango resident Roy Gary Robinson died after a three-year battle with cancer Saturday, Aug. 3, 2013, at his home. He was 66.

Mr. Robinson was born to Glenn and Mary Janice Robinson on Dec. 1, 1946, in Odessa, Texas. He was the oldest of five children. After graduating from Odessa High School in 1965, he pursued a career in oil production.

During the more than 40 years Mr. Robinson worked for Amoco and Dresser Rand, he traveled the world to places such as West Africa, Russia, the Middle East and South America. In 1983, he went to Manila, Philippines, where he met his future wife, Amalia B. Medallo.

On June 19, 1984, the couple wed in Manila. Soon thereafter, they moved to Sharjah in the United Arab Emirates. They lived there until 1990, when they moved to Durango.

"Roy always loved the mountains," according to his family, "and their move fulfilled his longtime dream."

In his spare time, Mr. Robinson enjoyed taking apart cars and trucks and putting them back together again.

"His son Glen thinks of him as a 'mechanical genius,'" according to his family, "while his kids have many fond memories of coming home from school and seeing him greasy and under the hood. Roy was a very strong, yet kindhearted and giving man."

Mr. Robinson is survived by his wife of 29 years, Amalia Robinson of Durango; daughters Maly J. Strietzel of Durango and Sarah C. Saunders and Anna M. Robinson both of Seattle; sons Aaron M. Robinson and T.J. Robinson, both of Durango, and Glen M. Robinson of Seattle; brothers Larry G. Robinson and Paul E. Robinson, both of Odessa; sisters Dale Irene Gibble of Houston and Marian J. London of Moody, Texas; four grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews and extended family members.

A time of gathering will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 8, 2013, at Ector County Cemetery, 300 S. Dixie Blvd., in Odessa, where he will be buried next to his parents.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Amalia M. Robinson, P.O. Box 2586, Durango, CO 81301.
