Robert Shepherd Obituary

Robert Oneal Shepherd, 78, passed away Saturday, January 29, 2022, in Durango, Colorado.

Robert was born June 26, 1943, to Clarence Oneal Shepherd and Iris McCauley Shepherd at St. Mary's Hospital in Port Arthur, Texas. Robert Shepherd was one of four children.

He held several interesting jobs in his early years, spending summer as a ranch hand in the Texas Panhandle, working on a dairy farm in Nacogdoches, Texas, serving on a Diamond S tanker out of Sabine Pass, Texas, and selling bibles throughout West Virginia.

After graduation from Thomas Jefferson High School in Port Arthur, Texas, he attended Stephen F. Austin in Nacogdoches, Texas, before being drafted into the United States Army in 1966. He trained in Fort Sam Houston and spent the duration of his duty at Fort Lewis in Washington. He was honorably discharged in 1968.

After serving, Robert attended the University of Wyoming, in Laramie, before relocating to Boulder, Colorado, to study at the University of Colorado. He spent several years in Monte Vista, Colorado, prior to settling permanently in Durango to pursue writing. His first book, a religious and philosophical tome, was published in 1997. At the time of his death, his second manuscript was in its final editing stages at his publisher.

He is survived by his aunt, Helen McCauley Billingsley, and husband David; two brothers, David Shepherd and wife Cathy, Daniel Shepherd and wife Pam, and a sister, Rebecca Shepherd all of Timpson, Texas. He is also survived by five nieces and nephews.

Pending memorial services will be held at New Prospect Cemetery in Shelby County, Texas.
