Robert Cleveland Hank Payne of Huntsville died Thursday at Huntsville Hospital. He was 85. Mr. Payne, a retired Sergeant with the Huntsville Police Department with 30 years of service, was a native and lifelong resident of Madison County. A veteran of World War II, he served in the U.S. Army and was the recipient of the Purple Heart for injuries suffered during battle. He was a member of Jackson Way Baptist Church and was preceded in death by his wife of 55 years, Vickey Turner Payne. Survivors include his daughter, Tinker Steenburn of Meridianville; one brother, Erskine Payne of Huntsville; one sister, Sarah Payton of Meridianville; one grandson, Barry Steenburn of Meridianville; one great-granddaughter, Abagale Steenburn; and a host of nieces, nephews and many friends. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Jackson Way Baptist Church, with the Rev. Gary Jordan officiating. Burial will follow in Taylor Cemetery with Spry Funeral Home directing. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday at Spry Funeral Home and Mr. Payne will lie in state at the church for one hour prior to service time.
