Robert Koenig Obituary

Robert Leroy Koenig passed away on December 12, 2023 at his home in Durango, CO surrounded by his loving family at the age of 81. Born on May 12, 1942 in Vineland NJ, Bob lived a life of adventure and travel. Bob was a kind, honest, funny and hardworking individual who will be deeply missed by all who knew him. Bob is survived by his loving spouse of 51 years, Estela Koenig, his daughters Michelle (Bruce) Morris and Anna Lise (Tim McGrath) Koenig, his grandchildren Ryan and Robbie Morris and his sister Meredith Koenig. He was a devoted family man and cherished the time spent with his loved ones. In his professional life, Bob was a successful exploration geologist with ExxonMobil for 30 years. He was passionate about his work and the field of geology. He could often be found pointing out various geologic points of interest to anyone who would listen. His career and love of travel found him in West Africa early in his career where he met his devoted spouse, Estela. He relocated after retirement to Durango CO over 20 years ago where he could pursue all things adventurous. He devoted his time and skill to his beautiful property in Durango creating a gathering place for family and friends from around the world. Many a lively dinner party occurred there filled with stories and laughter. He was often heard reciting poetry at these events, all from memory and with style. He loved classical music and was quite proficient playing classical guitar. In his later years, he found joy in the study of genealogy. In his free time, he could be found around Durango enjoying the great outdoors at any time of year. In the summers, he raced the train, summited Engineer, hiked the high country and in the winter one could find him on the ski slopes in pursuit of the perfect carved turn. Bob will be remembered for his thoughtfulness, good nature, and kind heart. His presence will be deeply missed by his family, friends and all those who had the privilege of knowing him. May his soul find eternal peace.
