Robert Harrington Obituary

Robert "Bob" Harrington, born in 1945 in Watertown, New York, passed away peacefully on November 15, 2024, at his home in Durango, Colorado. In accordance with his wishes, no services will be held.

Raised on a dairy farm with his sister, Jean, Bob learned the value of hard work early in life - one of his sayings was "a man's wages for a man's work." That work ethic was central to Bob's life, as was a commitment to serving his community. After completing his undergraduate degree, Bob joined the U.S. Navy, where he served as a multiengine transport pilot and flight instructor. Later, despite his challenges with dyslexia, Bob earned a Ph.D. in accounting, with which Bob found his true calling as a college professor. As a professor at the University of Montana and then at Fort Lewis College, he dedicated himself to helping his students succeed, both in the classroom and as students began their careers. Upon retiring from teaching, Bob turned his attention to nonprofit organizations in Durango, serving on several boards. He was particularly proud of his contributions to the Adult Education Center and Liberty School, where his efforts made lasting impacts.

Bob often described himself as "uncommonly blessed." While his first marriage, to Cecilia Barr ended in divorce, they remained close friends and co-parents to their daughter, Paige, and dedicated grandparents to Paige's granddaughters. When Bob moved to Durango, he met Penny O'Keefe, with whom he shared a deep and loving partnership for 32 years until she passed away earlier this year. Together, Bob and Penny hiked the San Juan Mountains, summited more than half of Colorado's 14,000-foot peaks, skied throughout the Rockies, and traveled much of the world. Bob was also blessed with wonderful friendships, many of which were formed through a shared love of the outdoors. An avid fly fisherman and bird hunter, he cherished time spent with his "buddies" in his own backyard and around the world - from South Dakota to Argentina to the Caribbean.

Bob was preceded in death by his partner, Penny O'Keefe, and his sister, Jean Percy. He is survived by his daughter, Paige Patrick, and her family.

Bob's big laugh and sometimes questionable sense of humor will be missed by all who knew him.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Liberty School of Durango, Colorado.

We became friends of Bob when living part time near Bayfield. My husband, George went regularly to the shooting range with him and their buddies. And we also did occasional hunting trips in other States. Bob was a thoughtful, kind person, and helpful to George.
As I now ask George to give his impressions about Bob, he replies, "great sense of humor, adept at understanding other people, and considerate in hunting and shooting with others."
What a privilege it was to know Bob!
Our deepest sympathy to Paige and all family members.
Affectionately,
Sheila and George Gumerman

Mr. Harrington was my professor at FLC in 1996-97. He was a great instructor. I saw him and his partner a year or so ago at the Kennebec Cafe and mentioned that I really enjoyed his classes, I'm glad I got to give him that praise. He deserved it.

Bob was absolutely one of the nicest people in Durango, caring about everyone, especially his family, and doing what he could do to make others' lives better. He was smart, a deep thinker, and had a great sense of humor. I will miss Bob.
