Ricky Kern Obituary

Rick Kern, former longtime Durango resident made his journey to life with Jesus on December 27, 2018, in Casa Grande, Arizona. Rick was born in Meridian, Idaho on January 30, 1955 and moved to Durango with his family in 1969. He attended Durango High School where he played three years of baseball and football, and earned a football scholarship to Fort Lewis College. At Fort Lewis Rick enjoyed playing football as a kicker and receiver. He began working part time at Hillcrest Golf Club during his Junior year. Graduating in 1977 with a BA in Business Administration, Rick continued working at Hillcrest becoming Superintendent. He spent the next 32 years managing the golf course and winter X-Country ski track, with a strong desire to maintain the best possible experience for golfers and skiers.

Rick loved coaching his children and their friends in Little League Baseball, was an avid golfer and sportsman, and enjoyed fall hunting trips with his sons. He also enjoyed following children's athletic events which kept the family busy year-round. Biking was another passion of Rick's, and a highlight was riding in three Durango-Silverton Races. Rick and Susie became motorcycle enthusiasts, and traveled extensively. They began a new chapter in the fall of 2016 when they sold their home, bought an RV, and spent the next two years visiting their children and grandchildren, friends, and seeing the country.

Rick was preceded in death by his parents Dwight and Carol Kern, of Nampa, Idaho. He is survived by his wife of 34 years, Susie; children Jennifer Kern and Jered Kern, Eugene, Oregon, Jeffery Kern, Grapevine, Texas, Lori Moore, Littleton, CO, Tom Stacy, Denver, CO and Douglas Tatum, Brandywine, MD; grandchildren Ryley and Ashlyn Bainter, Braden,Tayci and Kayti Moore, Jamisyn and Josie Stacy, and David and Ellie Tatum. He is also survived by brothers Randy Kern, Idaho Falls, Rob Kern, Meridian, Idaho, and sister Rene Homer, Nampa, Idaho.

Memorial contributions may be made to Hillcrest Jr. Golf Foundation in Rick's name.

I am sending heartfelt sympathy to Susie and family on the loss of Rick. I went to high school and college with Rick and I have some great memories of him. He had a great sense of humor and he truly loved his family and friends. I also enjoyed seeing him at the golf course and in town. He did a lot for the Durango community and I am saddened to learn of his passing.

Jennifer, Jeff, and Jered,

Art and I have sweet memories and some great photos celebrating our chidren's birthdays and other notable family occasions with you three, your Mom, Lois, and your father, Rick! You were definitely part of our family! Loved sitting around my mother's (Lucille Horther's) kitchen table sharing food and much laughter with you all!

We know how much you'll miss your loving, supportive and hard-working father. He was a remarkable man! His legacy will live on with his special children, their spouses, his precious grandchildren, and all the lives he touched!

Our love to all,
