Richard Meyer Obituary

Durango resident Richard Dewitt Meyer Jr. died of cancer Friday, Dec. 16, 2011, at Mercy Regional Medical Center. He was 34.

Mr. Meyer was born Dec. 20, 1976, to Richard Sr. and Victoria (Parent) Meyer in Ann Arbor, Mich., where he grew up and attended schools. After graduating from Huron High School, he moved to Colorado, where he attended Western State College and Fort Lewis College.

On Feb. 28, 2009, Mr. Meyer married the love of his life, Jenna Johnson, in Thailand. The couple lived in Durango, where he co-owned Vivid Color Painting.

He enjoyed traveling, camping, snowboarding and wakeboarding as well as four-wheeling in his Ford Bronco. He loved soccer and played in Durango's local recreation leagues. In addition to watching Spain's soccer team, he rooted for the University of Michigan's football team, the Wolverines. He was fond of animals, especially dogs, and loved his three pet dogs, Isabelle, Heina, and Ruka.

"He was someone who was always joking, laughing and talking to everyone," his friends and family said.

Mr. Meyer is survived by his wife, Jenna Meyer, of Durango; father, Dick Meyer of Springfield, Mo.; brothers Chris Meyer of Boise, Idaho, and David Meyer of New Orleans; sisters Jennifer Meyer of Eugene, Ore., and Beth Zinty of Houston; grandmother Alice Parent of Raleigh N.C.; two aunts and an uncle.

Cremation will occur at Hood Mortuary Crematory in Durango. Visitation will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 18, 2011, at Hood Mortuary.

A celebration of life will be held at 4 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 20, 2011, at the Lost Dog Bar & Lounge, 1150 Main Ave.
