Richard Banes Obituary

BANES Richard (Dick) E. Banes, 71, passed away on July 18, 2015 in Farmington, NM. He was born on September 21, 1943 in Albuquerque, NM to Wiley and Elsie Banes.

Dickie and his brother Tommy spent many a summer at Teelawuket Guest Ranch at the upper end of Vallecito Lake, near Durango CO. During these times he learned to cinch a saddle, rope a horse, fly fish on the river, and rescue the tourists that came to spend a week as a cowboy. Could this be where he learned to take a swig of whiskey or sneak a smoke, LOL.

Dick attended NM Military Institute and Ft. Lewis College. He owned an Enco Service Station in Albuquerque, NM for a number of years. He later became the Executive Vice President of The Albuquerque Association of Credit Management.

Dick married his Jane on January 15, 1971 in Albuquerque, NM.

In 1979, they moved to the Durango area and bought a store on the NM/CO border and called it Dick& Jane's Place. During their years at this location, they became the center stone of Bondad and of ones that traveled Highway 550.

Dick was preceded in death by his parents.

He is survived by his wife, Jane (Janie); brother Tom Banes (Nancy) of Albuquerque; sister Nancy Calahan (Gordon) of Lakewood, Colo.; niece, Stacey Banes of Albuquerque; nephews Brandon Banes (Alicia) of Albuquerque, Devin Ferebee of Lakewood, Colo. and Kurtis Ferebee of Denver, Colo.; great nieces and nephews Samantha Finlayson and Megan Finlayson, Avery Banes, Matthew Pisa, Riley Pisa of Albuquerque and Dylan Ferebee of Lakewood, Colo. He is also survived by his dearest friends Tyra van Bell , all her family and Larry Gammon, a "TON" of friends we refer to as family and San Juan Rehab, Carol Cherry and her staff along with his two cohorts–Terry Roach and Len Leonard.

Cremation has taken place and the service will be at 11:00 AM on July 25, 2015 at The Oasis, 1601 N. Dustin Avenue, Suite B, Farmington. Dick's celebration of life will be officiated by Tom Yost and assistant James Junes.

The family would like to thank Dr. Charles Wilkins and Dr. Michael West of San Juan Regional Heart Center as well as the wonderful staff of Nurses and CNAs on the 5th floor, Angela Gardenhire, Christopher Lucero, Chandra Gallegos and so many more. They all went above and beyond and know I so appreciate you all.

In lieu of flowers, please make to dBonations to The First Tee of San Juan County P.O. Box 360 Kirtland, NM 87417, or a charity of your choice.

Dick's care is entrusted to Brewer, Lee & Larkin Funeral Home, 103 E. Ute St., in Farmington. (505)325-8688.
