Retired Scoggins Obituary

Retired Msgt. Lewie Travis Scoggins Sr., 91, passed away peacefully at his home at Lake Vallecito, Colorado on Tuesday, April 5, 2022.

Lewie was born March 15, 1931 in Jacksonville, Texas to Howard Wallace Scoggins Sr. and Ethel Frances Scoggins. He was the 3rd oldest of seven. Lewie graduated from Texas City HS in 1948. His yearbook noted that he was a "typical American boy, reliable".

He enlisted in the USMC the same year and served until his retirement in 1970, at the rank of Master Seargent. He served one tour in the Korean conflict, and two tours in Vietnam, receiving numerous awards and medals.

Lewie was a proud member of the USMC Rifle/Pistol team, and joined the Distinguished Shooters in 1955, after winning and placing in many competitions, most notably the McDougal Award (all Marine Corps Rifle Shooter) in 1961 with a score of 593.

After his military career, Lewie went on to work in civil service with US Customs Service where he served for 30 years before retiring. After which, he and his wife Millie Scoggins moved to their forever home at Lake Vallecito, Bayfield, CO. In 2011, the Vallecito Service League awarded Lewie Scoggins with Citizen of the Year.

In 2005, Lewie was widowed by his wife Millie Scoggins. And in 2020, lost his step-son David Ku. He is survived by his son Travis Scoggins, and daughter Debbie Baker (both from previous marriage), and daughters Paula Millar, and Terri VonFeldt. Lewie has 9 grand children, and 6 great grandchildren. He was also 1 of 7 children: Melba Pugh, Howard Scoggins Jr. (deceased), Glenn Scoggins, Gloria Linton, John Scoggins, and Nedra Brandt.

Lewie T. Scoggins will be buried at Ft. Logan National Cemetery in Denver, CO. Services to be announced.

If you would like help with any matters related to casualty assistance, Defense Finance & Accounting Service, Survivor Benefit Plan (SBP), Veterans Affairs (VA), etc. you can contact our office on Buckley SFB at 720-847-6693. The RAO is staffed by volunteers, all military retirees themselves, and our sole purpose is to provide assistance to any military retirees and surviving spouses/family members with anything related to their military service and/or benefits, in particular during difficult times such as this. We are deeply sorry for your loss.
