Rene Sweeney Obituary

Durango resident Rene Ann Sweeney died Saturday, April 19, 2014, in Durango. She was 69.

Mrs. Sweeney was born Nov. 14, 1944, in Camden, Tenn., the daughter of Guy and Virginia Creasman Maiden. She grew up in Camden with five brothers and sisters and graduated from Camden High School.

In 1961, she moved to Colorado Springs, where she worked for 18 years as a legal secretary. She married in 1965 and had two children. The marriage ended in divorce.

She moved to Durango in 1987 and married Ken Sweeney, the love of her life, her family said. In Durango, she worked as a legal secretary for 26 years with Dawes & Crane and Crane & Tejada PC.

Her interests were antiques and garage sales. Her hobbies were bowling, boating and reading, and she was an avid fisherman, known for catching Big Bertha and General Brown, according to her family.

She is survived by her husband, Ken Sweeney, of Durango; son, Bill Brockley, of Durango; daughter, Becky Johnson, of Colorado Springs; stepsons Jeff Sweeney of Wellington, Greg Sweeney of Bayfield and Brad Sweeney of San Antonio; brother Jerre Maiden and sister Angie Williams, both of Camden; and numerous grandchildren.

Services are yet to be scheduled and will be announced at a later date.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Pulmonary Clinic at Mercy Health Foundation, 1010 Three Springs Blvd., Durango, CO 81301, or The Elks Club of Durango, 901 East Second Ave., Durango, CO 81301.
