Ray Bulkeley Obituary

Former Durango resident Ray Bulkeley died Thursday, March 31, 2011, in Carlsbad, N.M. He was 97.

Mr. Bulkeley was born to Salmon Loring and Willie Mina (Graves) Bulkeley on Sept. 16, 1913, in Okeene, Okla. He grew up in Texas. Mr. Bulkeley graduated from high school in Santa Fe.

He served in the Navy during World War II.

On March 4, 1943, he married Margaret McGraff in Safford, Ariz. They moved to Del Norte, where Mr. Bulkeley worked as an accountant at the Chevrolet dealership.

In 1951, he moved to Durango, where he continued accounting work at the General Motors dealership.

After the death of his wife, he later married Sally Clark Akers on May 10, 1960, in Durango. Mr. Bulkeley went to work as a mail carrier and mail clerk until retiring in 1973. The Bulkeleys moved to Lompoc, Calif., and also lived in Washington for a while.

After Mrs. Bulkeley's death, he moved to Carlsbad.

On Sept. 16, 2002, he married Irene Wood in Carlsbad.

Mr. Bulkeley enjoyed golf, fishing, basketball and traveling. He sang with the Narrow Gauge Barbershop Chorus for many years in Durango. He was also a runner and won a number of races in his senior age group.

Mr. Bulkeley was a member of the First Baptist Church, life member of the Benevolent & Protective Order of Elks Lodge No. 1558 and life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, where he served as past commander Post No. 4031 in Durango. Mr. Bulkeley was the noble grand of Eddy Lodge No. 21 of the International Order of Odd Fellows.

Mr. Bulkeley is survived by his wife of eight years, Irene Wood Bulkeley, of Carlsbad; sons Michael Bulkeley of Anchorage, Alaska, and George Bulkeley of Grass Valley, Calif.; stepdaughters, Marjorie Halsey of Kingman, Ariz., Barbara Canaday of Sonoma, Calif., and Pam Roberts of Carlsbad; eight grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandson; and one nephew.

Cremation will take place. A graveside service will be held at 10:30 a.m., today, April 7, 2011, at Carlsbad Cemetery. The Rev. Bob Bacon will officiate. The Carlsbad Veterans Honor Guard will provide military honors.
