Randolph Scott Obituary

Former La Plata County Commissioner Randolph (R.T.) Tom Scott died Thursday, Oct. 18, 2012, at his home in Durango. He was 86.

Mr. Scott was born June 11, 1926, in Texhoma, Okla. He grew up in Oklahoma during the Dust Bowl and had many stories about the hardships his family endured.

He held odd jobs before moving to Durango in the early 1950s. He worked for Joe Hotter as an outfitter for several years. In January 1956, he married Shirley Ann Katschthaler at St. Columba Catholic Church in Durango.

In June 1956, Mr. Scott began a heavy-equipment construction company, Scott & Sons. The company grew during the 25 years he owned and operated it. One of his most notable projects was building the lake and fountain for Pagosa Lodge in Pagosa Springs.

After leaving the construction business, Mr. Scott obtained his real estate license, selling property in the Four Corners. In 1978, he was elected as La Plata County Commissioner. He was re-elected in 1982. During his eight years as commissioner, he worked hard to listen to and serve residents, his family said.

Mr. Scott enjoyed outdoor activities such as horseback riding and hunting.

He is survived by his wife, Shirley Scott of Durango; sons Randy Scott, Rodney Scott and Dr. Michael Scott., all of Durango, and Steve Scott of Riverton, Wyo.; daughter Sheri Reading of Albuquerque; eight grandchildren and one great-grandchild; brothers Winfeld Scott of New Mexico and Claude Scott of Oklahoma; and sister, Elmadene Kropp of Texas.

A celebration of life service will be held at 10 a.m. today, Oct. 22, 2012, at St. Columba Catholic Church, 1830 East Second Ave., Durango. Interment will take place at Greenmount Cemetery immediately after the service.
