Nelda Logan Obituary

Former Durango resident Nelda Jean Nelson Logan died Wednesday, July 6, 2011 in Montrose after a seven-month fight against cancer. She was 77.

Known to her friends as "Jean", and to her grandchildren as "Nana, " she was born to Claud and Edna Mae Nelson on Nov. 1, 1933, in Enid, Okla.

Mrs. Logan loved her life in Colorado from when she moved to Durango as a young girl in 1947 until her death, her family said. "She loved Colorado and its many beauties," they said.

On Nov. 21, 1951, she married Larry Logan in Durango.

Mrs. Logan graduated from Durango High School in 1952. Her husband worked for the Colorado Highway Department, so they lived and established friendships in Durango, Ridgway, Alamosa, Saguache and Montrose. They moved in and out of Durango several times in the 1950s, 1960s and 1970s, before eventually retiring in Montrose.

Mrs. Logan worked for the Bank of Durango.

Since 2003, Jean had been actively volunteering with Hospice and Palliative Care of Western Colorado in Montrose.

"Jean was a person with an easy smile, a kind heart, a genuine concern for others, and a love for trying new things," her family said. "Her interests in many artistic adventures led to a number of friendships and some wonderful creations."

Mrs. Logan was preceded in death by her husband of 51 years, Larry Logan.

She is survived by her sons Robert Logan of Durango and Richard Logan of Wenatchee, Wash.; daughter, Kay Logan Eyl, of Grand Junction; and five grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, July 24, 2011, at 2240 Majestic Circle, in Montrose.

Memorial contributions may be sent to Hospice and Palliative Care of Western Colorado, P.O. Box 1804, Montrose, CO 81402; or the Zink Family Fund, Durango Foundation for Educational Excellence, 201 E. 12th St., Durango CO 81301.
