Naomi Brown Obituary

Bayfield resident Naomi Jean Conrad Carter Brown died of natural causes Tuesday, March 24, 2011. She was 86.

Mrs. Brown was born Feb. 17, 1925, to Donald Morris and Mary Elizabeth Koon Conrad in Farmington, N.M.

She was a direct descendent of John and Barbara Goeglein, early German settlers who lived in the area of the present-day Goeglein Gulch Road, near Fort Lewis College.

Mrs. Brown graduated in 1942 from Durango High School. In her early 20s, she and a girlfriend owned the first drive-in restaurant in Durango, where the Big O Tire store is now located.

In May 1947, she married Charles Carter, of Dolores, in Aztec. They had four daughters.

After Mr. Carter died in 1963, she managed his Cannon Ball Tour company for a time.

In 1965, she married Warren Joe Brown, and they were sealed in 1980 at the St. George, Utah, Temple.

Mrs. Brown was baptized into the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in April 1963 and served in many callings.

Her hobbies included remodeling homes, traveling and holding garage sales. She especially enjoyed gardening.

Mrs. Brown was preceded in death by one grandchild and one great-grandchild.

She is survived by her husband of more than 45 years, Warren Joe Brown of Bayfield; sister, Thea Conrad Salvador of Hemet, Calif.; children, Connie Collett of Black Canyon City, Ariz., Terry Lynn Hood of Cortez, Claudia Carter of Bothell, Wash., Bruce Brown of Dayton, Ohio, Cindy Highland and Christy Duran, both of Bayfield, and Gary, Brad and Twila Brown, all of Pagosa Springs; 18 grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren.

A funeral will be held at noon Wednesday, March 30, 2011, at the LDS church in Bayfield. At her request, there will be no visitation. A private internment has already been conducted at the Pine River Cemetery in Bayfield.

Mrs. Brown requested that in lieu in flowers people take their loved ones out to dinner.
