Nancy Hammond Obituary

Nancy Kathleen Hammond, age 79, passed away peacefully surrounded by family June 6, 2024. Nancy was a longtime resident of Durango, CO prior to moving to Littleton, Colorado where she was a resident of Balfour at Littleton Memory Care. Nancy had suffered from Dementia then Alzheimer's Disease for the past 8 years.

Nancy was born August 31, 1944 to Roy and Eleanor Wertz in Chicago, Illinois. Nancy met her future husband, Peter, when she was 14 years old at the roller skating rink where they spent a great deal of time dancing together on skates. Nancy and Peter married in 1962 and raised two sons together. Their family moved to Durango in 1975 where Nancy and Peter owned Centennial Laundromat and Aspen Mountain Cabins. Nancy worked for Durango 9-R in accounting before co-owning Basin Printing & Imaging with family for 28 years at which time the business was sold. Nancy was a member of Durango High Noon Rotary which she treasured.

During her many years in Durango, Nancy enjoyed skiing, dancing, rafting, volleyball, bird watching, and spending time and having fun with many good friends. At age 75, she still showed off her ability to do the splits. After retiring in 2010, Nancy and Pete bought a second home in Casa Grande, Arizona where they spent their winters and lived near many of their good friends who were also retired.

Nancy is preceded in death by her husband, Peter and her oldest son, Jeff, her twin brother, Richard Wertz, and her older brother, George Wertz. Nancy is survived by her youngest son, Michael (Diana) Hammond of Littleton, grandchildren, Melissa (Tristan) Conley of Littleton, Brittany Hammond of Denver, Skyler (Dalton) Combs of Englewood, Nathan Hammond of Durango, Natalie Hammond (Pete Werner) of Fort Collins, 5 great-grandchildren, nieces, family in-law of Chicago, Illinois, and many great friends they considered family.

A memorial will be held later in the summer.

I am so sad to hear of Nancy´s passing in June! She was a dear dear friend of mine for many years. Until we lost touch. She treated me like a daughter she never had. I worked at Basin printing for seven years, but was already fast friends when I started. All my love, RIP my dear friend.

I met Pete and Nancy in Chicago when I was a teenager. They were friends with my brother Charlie (Tuna) Friendreis. I babysat for their sons when they were little guys. I visited them on many occasions in their mountain home. Whenever I see a hummingbird I think of the hundreds that would visit their home. Sure gonna miss them both! Love you!
