Nancy Brockman Obituary

If you were to search for "special event" in the dictionary, you'd probably find a picture of Nancy Ann Brockman - an absolute icon of celebration, affectionately dubbed by Jordan, the son of her oldest friend Marisa. The term pretty much sums her up.

Nancy transitioned Sunday, August 18, 2024 surrounded by friends. Born on October 11, 1962, to John A. Brockman and Mary Macchi Brockman, she spent her formative years in Woodcliff Lake, New Jersey.

Nancy was larger than life, creative, thoughtful, and had a wicked sense of humor. She had a knack for turning every moment into something special, hilarious, and unforgettable. A writer, a trailblazer, an animal whisperer, a comedian, and a consultant, she was the ultimate extrovert and was always in charge. To countless people, she was a multifaceted gem, effortlessly making friends wherever she went.

From a young age, storytelling was in her blood; she was always on the hunt for "material" and crafting plays with a passion for words that became her signature. In 1993, she founded Chimera Communications, Inc. in Albany, New York, before relocating her business and life to Durango, Colorado, in June 1996. She believed that ideas were king and had an endless supply of her own. Recently, she published a children's book series titled Naughty Dogs at Woo Woo Junction.

One of Nancy's most profound contributions, both personally and professionally, was her involvement with the Jordan Porco Foundation, a non-profit dedicated to suicide prevention and mental health, established in memory of her dear friend's son. Her vision and creative gave rise to the Foundation's signature program, Fresh Check Day, which has gone onto distribute vital mental health messaging to more than 250,000 college students across the country through an engaging and uplifting model since 2012. Through Fresh Check Day's continued impact, born from an idea offered around a kitchen table conversation while wrestling with grief and purpose, Nancy's legacy is sure to live on loudly, inspiring courage, hope, and vitality within future generations.

She leaves behind her cherished dogs, Otto and Cozy; her sister, Marilyn; nieces Ramona and Eleanor; great-niece Maris; sister-in-law Susan; nephews James Jr. and Matthew; cousin Kate; and a multitude of friends - you all know who you are.

We'll keep her memory alive with the endless Nancy stories that will be recounted over and over. Once she graced us with her presence, now she'll be everywhere. Her imprint is permanent.

In her honor, her Silverton Family will host a birthday celebration for Nancy on Friday, October 11, from 6 PM to 8 PM at the Grand Imperial Hotel.

Please visit Nancy's Hillside Wind Phone located at the Silverton cemetery. In her op-ed for the Silverton Standard last fall, she expressed, "I envisioned The Hillside Wind Phone not as a monument to me when this cancer kills me, but as a gift to those who visit the cemetery, including my friends and family, but more importantly to all."

Nancy was larger than life...exuberant, creative, with an inexhaustible supply of ideas and the best laugh ever! I met her when we both worked at GE Research and Development in Niskayuna, NY, in the early 1990s, and stayed in touch with her after she moved to Colorado, especially looking forward to our lengthy Happy Birthday emails. She had the biggest heart, especially for her animals, and a deep love for the earth and Mother Nature. In an email to me in 2020, after I had hip surgery, she wrote: "You don´t need legs to be awesome - that happens from your heart and mind. And besides, we should all aspire to be mermaids...I want a tail." Nancy, you were ALWAYS a mermaid! And now you have your tail. I will miss you so.

So very sorry to hear this news. I met Nancy in NH, where we were good friends until we lost touch after her move out west. I thought of her often over these past decades, and I certainly didn't expect this when I decided to google her this morning, to check in on how she was doing. She was a delightful and large personality, and I have very fond memories of our friendship. God Bless you NB. My condolences to her family and her Colorado friends.

You could always count on a great time when Nancy was around! One time in particular was her birthday party which was held downstairs at the old
Scoot-n-Blues. Of course, the place was packed and we had a blast! I'll miss sharing a smooth bottle of tequila with her. We sure had some great rides!
Ride on Nancy, on a road never traveled! We all love you and will miss you, Badgirl Deb
