Mildred Scott Obituary

Mildred (Millie) Juanita Scott, age 90, died peacefully on February 7, 2015, in Durango, Colorado, at Sunshine Gardens Country Home, from complications of Alzheimer's disease.

Millie was born on April 23, 1924, in Spur, Texas, to Charles and Eddythe Witt. The family farmed in Kalgary, Texas, where they lived in a two-room, dirt floor house. As was the practice back in the day, the children had daily farming chores. Millie and her younger siblings, Charlene Witt Brasher and Edgar Wayne Witt, hoed cotton until Millie was old enough to take over milking the cows and preparing the noon-day meals.

The family loved the Lord and, with the community, celebrated their faith in the tiny Kalgary Church. All had beautiful voices and sang in the Church choir led by Charles Witt. Up until just a few years ago, Millie could remember and sing her favorite hymns.

After high school Millie felt like she was ready to leave farm life and moved to Clovis, New Mexico, to work as a nanny. From there she applied her considerable secretarial skills (learned in school) at Army bases in Ohio and in Clovis, and at the Spur Bank. She was fortunate to visit many States and even to live for a time in Honolulu, Hawaii, before returning to Texas. There she reconnected with and married her high school antagonist W. T. "Scotty" Scott – yes, he did push her off the porch and she skinned her knees. Millie worked at Litton Industries in Lubbock and with Scotty they farmed and raised cattle in Kalgary. After a vacation in southwest Colorado, their retirement goal became Durango and they made it happen.

Millie was preceded in death by her beloved husband W. T. "Scotty" Scott in 2007, by her brother Edgar Wayne Witt, her son Robert F. Bertram, Jr., and her grandson Deven Shaline. She is survived by her daughter Karen Young (husband Dennis Young), grandson Deck Shaline (wife Diane Shaline), granddaughter Christine Bertram, great grandchildren Brendon Shaline, Madeline Shaline, and Jacob Rossbo.

Both Millie and Scotty were members of the First Baptist Church of Durango sharing their love of the Lord with their Church family. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made, in her memory, to the Alzheimer's Association, 701 Camino Del Rio, Durango, Colorado, 81301, or to a charity or Church of your choice. And, please, feel free to be joyful and wear bright colors.

A memorial service will be held on Thursday, February 12, 2015, at 2:00 p.m. at Hood Mortuary, with Jeff Dobesh officiating. Visit www.hoodmortuary.com for more details.

Karen, I was saddened to learn of you Mom's passing. I have known her most of my life, as I also grew up at Kalgary. How I did love to hear her and her mother sing together, one of my favorite songs they sang was "Kneel At The Cross". Eddythe was my Sunday School teacher; I still have a Bible she gave me December 25, 1950. Your family has been precious to me, as was Scotty and his family. May our Lord comfort you in the days ahead.
Sincerely,
Janice Pierce Robinett, Kalgary, Texas

Karen & Dennis,

We were so saddened to hear of Millie's passing. We know the last few years have been rough. Our family is so glad we had the opportunity to know both she and Scotty as the wonderful people and neighbors they were.
All of you are in our thoughts.
