Mildred Newton Obituary

Former Bayfield resident Mildred Jean Newton died Wednesday, April 11, 2012, at her home in Aztec. She was 79.

Mrs. Newton was born to Dewey and Eliza Rose on Jan. 6, 1933, in Weir, W.Va. She was one of eight children.

After she married Herbert Lee Newton Jr., the couple and their children moved around as he pursued a career in the Navy.

Mrs. Newton lived in Bayfield for about 20 years beginning in the 1980s.

Her family said she was a mother, sister, grandmother and "the trailer park watchdog." She enjoyed gardening and took special pride in her lawn. If she wasn't working in her yard, she was on the go – often to the casino with her friend Maxcine Flaherty. She gave nicknames to all of her grandchildren.

"She was our glue, our 'ornery tiny,' a 'go to' for everything," her family said. "She was always doing something for someone and never asked or took from anyone. She was very stubborn, but the strongest, for sure."

Mrs. Newton was preceded in death by her husband of 22 years, Herbert Lee Newton Jr.

She is survived by her children Lee Newton of Bayfield, and Robin Hinshaw and Greg Newton, both of Aztec; sisters Nead Rose and Sybil Taylor, both of Clendenin, W.Va.; brothers Orville Rose, Hoyt Rose and Daryell Rose, all of Clendenin; seven grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be held from 2 to 8 p.m. Monday, April 16, 2012, at Hood Mortuary Chapel, 1261 East Third Ave., in Durango. A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, April 17, 2012, at the Church of Christ, 2011 U.S. Highway 160B in Bayfield. Ray Calloway will officiate. Burial will take place afterward at Pine River Cemetery.
