Mildred Leonard Obituary

Mildred was born on July 27, 1916, on the Parrett family Farm near South Salem, OH, the only child of Lillian Estelle (Porterfeild) Parrett and Edgar Wilson Parrett.

Mildred's parents were with the Bureau of Indian Affairs (then called the Indian Service) and moved from reservation to reservation around the United States. They lived in Santa Fe, NM, Shawnee, OK, Busby, MT, and Fort Bidwell, CA. In 1930, when Mildred was 14, the family moved to the Four Corners region, where she spent the rest of her life. She attended schools throughout the family's travels.

Mildred lived in Farmington, NM for forty-five years, raising her three sons, Ted, Bob, and Jack. In 1978, she and her father moved to the Ignacio Senior Center, where she lived ever since. She cared for her father until his death in 1980.

Mildred has enjoyed her life at the Senior Center, volunteering, taking part in its many activities, and she often said, "The Center has taken good care of me." She was an inspiration to all who know her, with a wonderful sense of humor, a generous heart, and stunning good looks.

Mildred is preceded in death by sons Bob in 1993, Jack in 2009, and Ted in 2014.

Mildred is survived by daughters-in-law Ann and Patt, three grandsons, three granddaughters, seven great grandsons, three great granddaughters, and 2 new great, great grandbabies.

Services will be held at 1:00pm on Saturday, February 20, 2016 at the Ignacio Senior Center, 15345 Highway 172, Ignacio, CO.

If so desired, donations can be made in Mildred's name to the Ignacio Senior Center. Mildred will be greatly missed by all.

I was blessed for several seasons to call Mildred my step-grandmother when my mother was married to Mildred´s son, Bob. I really felt fortunate to have known her. Such a gracious and loving soul! Her wisdom was inspiring. She had such a way of knowing and such depth of heart and spirit. When she´d take my hand in her hands as I spoke, I knew her understanding was far beyond the words we shared . She looked right to your soul. As families parted, we stayed in touch through holiday cards and letters, but I´d always hoped I would someday make it to the senior center just to hear her voice and hold those gentle hands again. Such grace and tender kindness. And such a blessing to everyone fortunate to know her and hear her kind words. Mildred´s body may have finished its purpose, but her spirit lives on in all who encountered her. I feel extremely fortunate to have known her, and my admiration for her will never end.

I am so sorry to hear of Mildred's passing. My mom (Roberta Parrett Loney - they were cousins) and I got to visit Mildred in 2008 and kept in touch - we last spoke after my mom passed away in December 2015. Mom had many fond memories of her Uncle Leonard and Aunt Lillian and Mildred. Wishing her family peace.

It was a great pleasure to have known Mildred. She was fixture for many years at the Ignacio Historical Society meetings. I always enjoyed her stories about Ignacio in the 1930's God speed, Mildred! You are missed!
