Michele Martin Obituary

Durango resident Michele Hays Martin died Friday, Feb. 6, 2009. She was 54.

Mrs. Martin was born May 6, 1955, in San Angelo, Texas, to V.J. and Charlotte Wall Hays. She grew up on the Hermosa Cliffs Guest Ranch, north of Durango. The ranch now is known as Needles Country Square. Family members recall Mrs. Martin was quick to learn how to cook, clean cabins and greet guests with a smile at the ranch. She rode to school in Durango in what passed for a school bus, a nine-passenger Ford station wagonShe was renowned for her green thumb and was known to grow 10-foot sunflowers at nearly 11,000 feet elevation. She enjoyed collecting antiques, entertaining guests and pressing wild flowers into collages and giving them as gifts to friends.

Family members say Mrs. Martin accepted whatever came into her life, looked forward to life's challenges and left behind many friends from all walks of life who will miss her dearly.

She is survived by her husband, Lew Martin of Monticello, Utah; her sons, Eric, Matt, Gabe and Seth; daughter, Erin Ogilvy of San Angelo, Texas; brother, Greg Hays of Durango, and four grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 10, 2009, at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses in Cortez, 1304 E. Empire St.
