Maureen Johnson Obituary

Beloved Mother, Grandmother, Sister, Aunt, and Friend to many lived bravely with breast cancer for five years and passed after a brief hospital stay. Maureen grew up in Durango, CO and graduated from Durango High School in 1968. She also lived in Seattle, Phoenix, and Reno before moving to the California Bay Area in 1977. She lived In Marin and Solano Counties before moving to Livermore fifteen years ago. Maureen worked as a Clerk for the US Postal Service in San Rafael, CA and retired in 2008. She was an alumna of Sonoma State University where she earned her BA degrees in Psychology and Spanish Language. She was a lover of animals and the outdoors. She enjoyed traveling, camping, hiking, gardening, and snorkeling, and was a member of the Sierra Club. She loved baking especially with her grandchildren. She spent time as a caregiver/companion for seniors, volunteered as a literacy tutor through the Napa Library's Grandparents and Books program, as a tutor for Spanish speaking English language learners, as a classroom volunteer for the LVJUSD, and as a Girl Scout volunteer for her granddaughter's troop.

Maureen was proceeded in death by her parents Charles J Hyland, and Ann (Kobera) Hyland, older brother Thomas F Hyland, and long-time partner Victor A Perez. She is survived by her twin brother Michael Hyland, Sisters-in-Law Lori Kizer and Geraldine (Lobato) Hyland, only daughter Amber Johnson-Correa, son in law Vicente Correa, grandchildren Aurelia and Vicente Jr., and many nieces, nephews, and extended family. Maureen also leaves behind her rescue dog Kira who is being cared for by dear friend Jan Kohnhorst.

Maureen was raised Catholic, but as an adult became a spiritual seeker who found strength in meditation, yoga, AA, gospel music, and Buddhist teachings. She believed strongly in kindness and in being of service to others. Please honor her memory through good deeds, acts of kindness, and regular health screenings. If you wish to make a donation in Maureen's name, both culinaryangels.org and Hairtostay.org enhanced the quality-of-life Maureen enjoyed while going through treatment.

A Celebration of Life will be held Saturday September 20th at the Livermore, CA Veteran's Hall at 2pm.
