Mary Wallace Obituary

Mary Lou Wallace passed away at home with her family on Thursday, June 16, 2016. A fourth-generation native of Durango and southwest Colorado, Mary Lou was born October 18, 1926 to parents Harold and Ruth Waggoner. Harold's pursuit of gold mining interests in Mexico and his untimely death there of typhoid fever left Ruth to raise Mary Lou and her older sister Edris on her own.

The family lived for a number of years in Animas City with grandparents William and Lillie Paddock in the back of their store located at what is now 32nd and Main in Durango. Mary Lou attended Animas school. Ruth and the girls later moved down to Durango where they lived in the Fields Apartments on the corner of 7th Street and 3rd Avenue close to where Ruth could walk to her work as a waitress at the Strater.

Mary Lou graduated from Durango High School in 1944 where she forged bonds with lifelong friends. After a year at the "old" Fort Lewis in Hesperus, she spent a brief time in California working in support of the War effort. Mary Lou returned to Durango where she worked for the Power Company and lived with her Mother and grandfather on 3rd Avenue next door to Mr. A.D. Camp.

Mary Lou met and married Edwin "Ned" Wallace in 1951 a year after his arrival in Hesperus to be the assistant basketball coach at Fort Lewis A&M College. Ned and Mary Lou had two children, Scott and Barbara, and lived on the campus in Hesperus until the college moved into Durango in 1956. Mary Lou worked as mom and home maker while volunteering with the Mercy Axillary. She later worked at Pants and Things developing a following among customers who were drawn by her style and taste.

Mary Lou's kindness and gentle manner contributed to her becoming an important part of the lives of her four grandchildren. She is survived by her children Barbara Howard and Scott Wallace (Carol), grandchildren Courtney Wallace and Kelly Wallace Moore, Alex and Scotty Howard.

The family would like to express its deepest gratitude to the Nurses and Caregivers of Mercy Hospice.

Mary Lou requested that there be no funeral or service.

May Lou Wallace was one of the most beautiful people I have known. In fact, I do not remember a time when I did not know her. I know that mutual friendships forged bonds that lasted from the time she and Ned were first acquainted with my folks. She is among the last of the FLC people yet alive that had ties to the old campus. Many of the people who moved with FLC from the old campus to the site on Reservoir Hill when the college moved to Durango in 1956 remained close friends. That was true of the Wallaces and the Blacks. Rest in Peace Mary Lou. And may the peace of the Lord be with you and your family.

Mary Lou was an elegant woman. She always reminded me of Grace Kelly. Her husband, Ned, had an important role at Fort Lewis College, and she often attended many college events and was ever the gracious hostess and a strong advocate for the college and community. She will be missed. Sending my heartfelt sympathy to her children, grandchildren and friends.
