Mary Sullivan Obituary

Mary departed this earth on April 26, 2015. Her death was unexpected. Mary was a resident of Sunshine Gardens when she died, at age 87.

Mary was born in St Joseph's Hospital in Far Rockaway-a community on the south shore of Long Island, NY. Mom and dad provided a warm and loving home. Like many people growing up in the Depression, life was a day-to-day struggle. The efforts to survive brought the family close together. We shared the many tasks required to make a house a home.

When her parents could not afford expensive toys Mary learned to be inventive and creative. Mary crafted and operated marionettes. Her needlepoint pictures will be cherished always.

My sister and I were very close. We had a deep love for each other and a love of God.

Mary never chose to marry. Mary was a good student. She received top grades all through school. She graduated from Woodmere High School in 1945. Her parents could not afford to send Mary to college, but her employment career reflected on her ability. She progressed from a job in a small company to become an executive secretary for Union Carbide Corporation in New York. When Carbide moved its headquarters to Danbury, Connecticut, Mary moved with them. Mary retired to her lovely home in Bethel, Connecticut, at age 58.

Mary loved to travel. She particularly enjoyed a trip to Ireland where her parents were born in County Kerry. Mary had a deep love for her Irish Heritage. Her parents, also, taught Mary to appreciate the freedoms bestowed on us as Americans.

Mary had a long life and many loyal friends. Mary left a legacy of courage when she faced the loss of her mom in a tragic car accident.

Mary was a very caring and unselfish person. Her life was truly a life well lived. Mary will never be forgotten but remembered forever, goodbye sis, I love you.

Mary was preceded in death by her parents Patrick and Mary Sullivan.

Mary is survived by her brother Edward, her sister-in-law Joyce, and her cousins: Kathleen Cumberland and Eileen Connelly, her nephews: Kevin Sullivan, Dr. Daniel Sullivan and Michael Sullivan, who supported and aided my sister with love and patience for many years. Mary leaves behind her nieces Catherine Sullivan and Patricia Sullivan. Mary leaves many sweet memories for her grand nephews and nieces: Patrick Sullivan, Anna Sullivan, Fallon Sullivan, Erin Sullivan, Joseph Sullivan and Carolyn Withee.

A private memorial service will be held for Mary in our home at 370 Red Rock Road, Durango, at a time and date to be determined.
